Sleet has turned to wet snow now, temperature down to 1.9 C

The Pentlands camera still 'plastered' with snow so it must be turning white up there

The earlier rain here in NW Edinburgh has now turned to sleet and wet snow with some quite big flakes.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Snow dying out here now. We are left with a slushy covering on all surfaces. The hill behind me (Blackford 160m) is whiter and I can see Arthur's Seat (260m) with an obvious covering and The Pentlands will definitely be white.

So the first feature of this cold spell has given us a wee taste of winter for the New Year

Currently snowing here with what looks like good 3 or 4 cm on the ground. It may be more but I have not been out to measure it (and the airport is reporting 4 cm at 6 am.

It also reinforces to me how useless the snow depth model charts are. To an extent I understand why (due to the convective nature of the snow), but none of them have this modelled nearly correctly, for example:

This is not a one off either.

There is however a nice little feature passing through overnight tonight which might give a spell for snow(?) for a while here too.

Could be a nice morning for a walk on the beach.

7cm this morning which has only been bettered three times in January in the past 20 years (2010, 2013, 2024).

Much preferable to the weeks of tedious mild, cloudy nothingness with not even a frost. -1C currently and prior to today had not been below freezing since 14th December.

Despite the Amber Warning I shall be surprised if we are treated to anything more than a bit of sleet here in the "...horseshoe round the Wash". We have had a few great winters over the years, snow rollers and drifting, filling of dykes, but they have been rare. But compared with the grand scale of European winters it's not looking promising. One lives in hope.
