The Weather Outlook

Given that we are now into a new year, this also means that we are into a brand new month and so it is time for a brand new thread for reporting this month's all important rainfall totals.

Indeed, a large part of the UK is even seeing some rain right now and there is even another thread which is devoted that this particular rain event alone.

Because of that, I'm almost certain that at least some of you will already have something to report for this month already and because of that, I have created this thread just now to allow anyone to do that as they wish.

At the moment, the models are suggesting a colder period ahead which means that we might eventually see some reports of at least part of many rainfall totals falling as snow but since cold air can hold much less water vapour than warm/mild air, this might also mean that the outlook in many places is a bit drier as a result.

Regardless of how all of this pans out though, this is the very thread for reporting those all important rainfall totals for this month.

An astonishing 74mm here in just 36 hours from 9pm Saturday to 9am on Monday (some of which was snow).    Much of this rain I believe fell on Sunday night.  I checked the rainfall radar and it seems we got stuck under an area of particularly heavy rain for a long period overnight.   This is probably the largest amount of rain in 36 hours I've seen outside of the Summer months.

Takes the month so far here to 80mm, so it's already a very wet month for us.

Within that python script, I have fixed a bug which was causing the reported rainfall amounts to be well above what they actually were.

Sort of the right thread for this but emphasising how wet the weekend was locally, I usually cycle through the Medway valley (Golden Green way for anyone local) and take a scenic route to work and had to turn round this morning as the road was closed by flooding. This was both sides of the Hartlake Bridge, which is the first time I've ever seen that.

The river had also topped it's banks in a couple of spots near our office (not far from the main bridge in Tonbridge) and the local Sainsburys carpark was flooded too although that's not particularly uncommon.

My WS has 53.6mm of rain noted, the bulk of which fell Saturday to Monday.

The latest GFS Op no longer has it as a cert for us to hit 100mm in Jan to start the year off, but it'll be close. Either way it is puddle-central and a mud-fest out there.
