After such a mild opening third, it's pretty astonishing that a single 5-day cold spell was then able to fully offset it and bring the CET back close to average. Three of the daily CETs were over 5°C below the 1991-2020 average, and all from a not particularly dramatic weather pattern. Things shaped up 'just so' for it to be about as cold as possible for the setup, so much so that there was even a bit of lying snow here in lowland NE Dorset!
Mixed conditions have since that the CET dancing around the 1991-2020 average, on course to finish very close to it, perhaps within 0.1°C.

I was suckered in by the forecasts and models at the end of last month showing prolonged mild weather. The raw figures for the first 9 days were nearly 2C warmer than it turned out to be , which is a huge anomaly these days.
