A slightly different one from me this morning - I missed out on the really spectacular stuff, as it was around midnight, but there's still some action this morning, and across the sky too - first time I've ever seen the aurora overhead, and to the south! Again with the naked eye it's a case of looking at some faint redness in the sky, but the camera shows what's going on.

Here's a comparison between a Pixel 6 in "night mode" - good enough, TBH, and the same shot with a proper camera, a Panasonic FZ1000 bridge camera set to a 12-second exposure.

UserPostedImageThese were taken from my bathroom window at 10pm with a pretty cheap smartphone with  1sec exposure. It was very clear to the naked eye at that time with flickering and movement even here in a built up area.  Looks like around Midnight would have been even better. I was out earlier and could see some with the naked eye but not as good as 10pm. These are actually looking  ENE.

My review of this one was:

More interesting colours than May, but less structure and Sky coverage.

May had these star shaped features and curly ribons and it was so bright you could easily see the colour. But the colour was very much entirely shades of pink.

This time around we mostly didn't have structure, except around midnight when we saw some ribons, but the colours were far more diverse than in May. I saw all manners of Pinks, Greens, Purples, Blues (at 5am this morning) and especially Red. In fact I don't think I have ever seen such a ruddy red aurora before even in photographs. Dark crimson red dominating was the biggest surprise.

So all in all

Color diversity: 9/10 (no yellow)

Structure: 5/10 (ribons but no starts or intricate shapes)

Coverage: 5/10 (mostly but not entirely limited to the northern part of the sky)

Longevity: 7/10 (From dusk and basically ebbs and flows all night to dawn)

Brightness: 6/10 (Bright enough to see with the naked eye easily, sometimes bright enough to see colour with the naked eye, but never more than a backlight type brightness without a camera)

Weather: 9/10 (it was a bit chilly to be out but no cloud)

2024/2025 Snow days (850hpa temp):10 days with snow/sleet falling

I've realised that my phone (Pixel 6 Pro) isn't that great at capturing aurora! Photos taken by people with iPhones seem clearer. These were mine - they're not that much better than what I could see with the naked eye, whereas I've seen plenty of iPhone pics just as good where the aurora could barely be seen with the naked eye.

Glitchy; freezy; Android Auto will periodically decide to stop working (need to unplug the cable and re-plug - whilst driving); the auto-correct is shite and stupid (doesn't seem to learn, like my previous Huawei P30 Pro did - and that wasn't great at it); auto-fill seems to have a mind of its own; the camera generally is a letdown.
