Not counting today we're up to a rather daft 231mm IMBY now. (I've had a quick look around some of the local stations and they're at similar monthly values so assume it's not an overcount).

A lot of the rain has been of the heavy variety, with 5 events exceeding 30mm and several thunderstorms.

The flood map shows it's mostly the heart of England that's majorly impacted.

The rain intensity has been unusual in the sense of how often it's been hammering it down. There's a few parts of the local woods that have had channels carved through them with all the run off and it's more like mid winter in terms of the amount of run off still happening and mud etc.

A bit OT but I did the London to Brighton off road last Saturday and that was entertainingly wet and muddy. It was at least sunny and warm in Brighton when I got there but I think someone said they'd had a fairly big storm the night before, which would explain the swampy descent off the downs towards the city.

What's been more noteworthy is that most of that rain was in heavy shower form, meaning most of it ended in the drains. That said, the last week has seen some lighter showers too, and the very topmost layer of soil is now mud rather than baked clay. You don't have to go down far to find the hard stuff, though, only a few mm!

With a day still to go, it's been a cold and dry September in my part of Edinburgh. 49mm of rain (78%) and mean temp 11.9 which is -0.7 C.

There were 8 completely dull days including 2 full weekends!

Just done some adding up and I've recorded 104.6 mm so far this month here at Folkestone with a bit more forecast for the next couple of day. Hope this isn't setting a precedence for the rest of this Autumn and throughout Winter. We're only in September and already everything are all soggy and muddy.

22mm so far today, and about 140 for the month.

Im expecting the Wirral to get up to about 40+ today, so would mean Sept being a very wet month.  I really hope we arent setting up like ( i think ) 2021.. where we had one wet month continually beaten by the next wet month. They were all 140+ months for about 5 months on the trot from Autumn

This whole system would have made such a wonderful snow event had it been 2 months + from now.

We are not in the warning area as too far North but it seems we should be judging from where the heaviest rain is.

Just persistent heavy rain, not really moving. 16mm now and plenty more to come.

It's interesting that I reported Edinburgh Gogarbank to be slightly wetter than average this month only for Jerry to then come in and report his own part of Edinburgh as being drier than average.

That should tell you everything you need to know about how local variations in rainfall totals can be quite big even within a very small area (even though I'm in NW Edinburgh, that's still very close on the grander scheme of things to where Jerry is in the south of Edinburgh).

As I write, it's raining here in Edinburgh just now and because of that, today is already an official rain day at Edinburgh Gogarbank as there has already been more than 1 mm of rain there since 10 am BST (09:00 UTC) this morning.

In spite of that though, the number of rain days at Edinburgh Gogarbank will go down in the final statistics for this month as being below average due to the fact that today is the last day of the month, and due to the fact that today's official rain day isn't enough to bring this month's total number of rain days up to the 1991-2020 September average for that particular station.

Hit 30mm here and we haven't even been in the brightest radar echos. Looking on Wunderground  perhaps 50-60mm around Wigan and 60mm around Holmfirth so far.

Further 28mm today  takes monthly total to a silly 243mm   and just on 1000mm this year already well above the long term annual average

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank is as follows:

Monthly Data

Final total for September 2024: 60.4 mm (109.5% of 1991-2020 September average)

Number of rain days during September 2024: 10 (94.9% of 1991-2020 September average)

Number of dry days during September 2024: 13

Rainfall totals were variable even across Edinburgh with some stations recording a drier than average month in terms of the actual rainfall amounts but for Edinburgh Gogarbank, it was a slightly wetter than average month in that regard.

However, the number of official rain days was slightly below average even at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

Seasonal Data

Total for this autumn so far: 60.4 mm (28.6% of 1991-2020 autumn average)

Number of rain days during this autumn: 10 (27.5% of 1991-2020 autumn average)

Number of dry days during this autumn: 13

Annual Data

Total for this year so far: 704.2 mm (89.8% of 1991-2020 annual average)

Number of rain days during this year: 110 (80.0% of 1991-2020 annual average)

Number of dry days during this year: 102
