Low pressure has been in control of the weather for much of May so far but high pressure will be in the ascendancy much more this week bringing plenty of dry and fine conditions. Temperatures will often be rather cool but in any May sunshine it should feel pleasant at least...

Saturday morning has been dry across the country but there has been a lot of cloud. This afternoon should see some of the cloud thinning and breaking to reveal bright or sunny spells though some eastern counties could stay cloudy all day. Scotland and Northern Ireland will turn cloudier this afternoon with outbreaks of rain into western Scotland and Northern Ireland by this evening. Temperatures will range from 10C in the cloud to 18C in the sunshine.

Overnight, England and Wales will stay dry with cleat spells and variable cloud while outbreaks of rain move southeastwards into Scotland and Northern Ireland. Temperatures range from 10C to 12C in the north and 6C to 9C in the south.

The band of rain continues to push southeastwards across Scotland and Northern Ireland tomorrow, eventually reaching northern England and north Wales by evening. A scattering of heavy and possibly thundery showers could break out ahead of the rain band across the Midlands and parts of southern and eastern England but the south east corner probably stays dry. Brighter and drier weather returns to Scotland and Northern Ireland later in the day. Temperatures will be warm in the south at 18C to 22C but cool in the north at 10C to 14C.

Monday will fine a trough of low pressure clearing away with high pressure building in behind it.

Overnight rain should clear and south and east quite quickly on Monday morning but some of the rain could linger for a while in the far south east corner.  Bright or sunny spells and a scattering of showers follow to Scotland and northern England but the rest of the country should stay dry. Temperatures 10C to 17C.

High pressure will dominate the weather on Tuesday just to the west of the country. Northerly winds will bring cloud and showers to Scotland and eastern England but many central and western regions will stay dry with bright or sunny spells. Temperatures will range from 9C to 16C.

High pressure remains in control of the weather for Wednesday. We should have a mainly dry day with bright spells and cloud though a few light showers are still possible in the east. Temperatures 9C to 17C.

A weather running into the high pressure could bring cloud and showery rain to Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England on Thursday but the south will stay dry with some bright spells. Temperatures 10C to 18C.

Showery rain could spread southwards across England and Wales on Friday with Scotland and Northern Ireland turning dry again. Temperatures 10C to 17C.

Next weekend may see the high pressure going to Scandinavia. Northern regions could have the best of the dry and sunny conditions but the south may be cloudy and showery at times.

Summary: A lot of dry weather but some showery rain at times. Rather cool but feeling pleasant in any sunshine.

Thanks Gavin P. Looks like this May isn't too brilliant. But there it is.
