As for the max, who knows? I think we can make it to 39, but 40C feels like a lot to ask as everything would have to align perfectly and we know it rarely does on days like this!

I don’t think everything has to ‘align perfectly’ - basically the entire eastern side of England from London to the Tees could exceed 40C today. It’s not like we’re talking about the usual heatwave where such extreme temperatures are usually very localised. Even if one station cops an isolated shower, there are still countless other stations that won’t.

An impressive rise!

Still under the inversion in Leysdown, just about to hit 20C now. (It goes to show that even with an inversion, things are still heating up relatively quickly). Neighbouring stations are showing 27C.

Now, does the official record require 9(am) to 9(am), or will 9pm to 9am suffice? I guess we'll soon see!

Indeed, the 00z runs of some models (Arome, GFS etc.) have trended towards the ECM with a faster lifting of the trough and reduced warm advection during the afternoon.

I still think we'll just about exceed 40C today, but it doesn't look as certain or widespread as I thought yesterday.

The Met Office website says for its extremes "Lowest minimum temperature - (2100 on the previous day to 0900 on the date shown)", but that doesn't explicitly say whether that period counts as the record.

It is either Kenley or Emley depending on how it is worked out.  I am hoping it is Emley as it wound be quite comical for the record to go from Brighton (you can imagine being sat comfortably on Brighton beach all night) to a windswept Pennine Moor (where you can't)

It would be good if the 300m high TV mast on Emley Moor had temp stations on its structure, to see what they read and where the optimum heat spot was.

There was some cirrocumulus in the east here in Cambridge before around 6:30am when the sun finally rose above it. Can't see any cloud  to the south now although there is some to the west. The sun is ostensibly in clear skies but it feels somewhat hazy.

Met Office tweet forecast has a max of 39C on the map and it is in London.... seems odd.

Yes it's a significant upgrade (in my book anything cooler is an upgrade!). Three or four degrees lower than forecast last night. As you say, by 5pm the cold front is sweeping east and temperatures do not get above 38c anywhere.

I think some parts could hit the record quite early today - maybe 1/2pm.

I’m just hoping my lawn receives a drenching later tonight!

For many esp in eastern areas, tonight will probably be more uncomfortable to sleep due to the humidity.

Actually the discussed areas are still likely to peak during 3-5pm.
