That patio fan is really doing wonders. Almost cold enough for the heating to kick in!

(And of course once the sun starts shining in it'll rocket up. But for now... most pleasant. I'm making the most of the cool air!)

I live in a house constructed to cope with high temperatures and it’s five hundred years old.... 18 inch thick cob walls, small windows and a thatched roof (upstairs stays cool). It’s set into the ground a bit and downstairs stays around 20C in this weather - we open the windows to warm it up. Of course it’s a different matter in the winter but we only heat it to 19C - perfectly good enough.

I now live in a modern thatched property and the thatch is the thing that keeps out the heat. Not cob walls of course, very few cob houses built nowadays. But it's still much much cooler inside than the nearby tiled/slated properties in a hot spell like now. I'll see what happens in the next day or two and I'm ready to sleep in the garden if it becomes too warm overnight to sleep indoors.

The office at the bottom of the garden is another matter. Brick walls that absorb the heat, make the place an oven in the afternoons. I need to fan in the cool air in the mornings to rid the inside of the overnight stored heat. I've lost the battle for today though.

I live in a converted stable block that's about 200yrs old with really thick stone walls. The building itself is floor level only and quite long and I have windows only to one side and also has a built awning over 2/3rds of window side which helps with the sun. I face west as well so don't get much sun till the afternoon.

So summers it tends to stay cool but Im always whinging I'm cold In the winter...but I choose not to ramp the heating up!

I open windows early and late to get some air in then shut them as soon as the temp starts to rise outside.

Currently 21.2c inside and temp rising outside at 22.4c. I've only lived here since early 2020 so will see how it fares with these high temps soon to be here.

So, with the windows firmly shut downstairs (with curtains drawn) and the windows upstairs all open, we have:

Outside: 27.3

Upstairs: 28.3

Downstairs: 20.5

That patio fan trick has really paid dividends so far.

The first evening of the heatwave:

Outside: 25.7C (down from 28C earlier)

Upstairs: 27.0C (window open, breeze coming in)

(Bedroom: 24.7, the a/c is on)

Downstairs: 22.5C (windows closed, curtains drawn, as they have been for most of the day).

I think the pre-conditioning was a big success today! I'd expect the downstairs temperature to rise overnight as the bricks release their heat, but it at least gives me a fighting chance to keep things habitable tomorrow.

It's a battle I won't win on Tuesday, as I'll be at work - I do, however, have a booking at the hotel just down the road from work for Tuesday evening (meaning I won't actually earn much that day. Worth it, though, to be able to sleep.)

Have had curtains and blinds shut since 10am when it got warmer outside

Turned upstairs a/c on at 5pm and has been cutting in and out to maintain our chosen 19.5c, nice temperature to sleep in. Will probably leave it on in auto mode to maintain this temperature until Wednesday morning.

Glad we installed a/c (but can’t really do comfortable working from home without it) as we use 4th bedroom as a study, however we had the simple version, so one controller does all 4 bedrooms, as all ducted off same unit in loft, so can’t set different temperatures in each bedroom

Having an elderly neighbour round tomorrow afternoon as she doesn’t have a/c

So, on the eve of the event we’ve managed to keep indoor temperatures to 24.5C as we go to bed. Hit 26C upstairs earlier but significantly lower than the 27.5C on Tuesday/Wednesday.

Will we manage to keep it under 30C indoors this week?

14.1C outside

18C in the living room - using the fan idea again

19.9C in my bedroom (west-facing)

22.7C in one of the back bedrooms (east-facing)

I would expect mid 30s all round upstairs this afternoon, the mission is to keep it below 30C downstairs.

(I'm expecting a high of 34/35C here today).

Slept ok last night and it wasn't too warm (23 downstairs, 25 upstairs) despite high of 30c yesterday and low of 20c last night.

Windows open now whilst it is just cooler than outside then close all curtains and windows.

Early evening update - it's been above 30C outside for coming up to 8 hours, and above 35C for the past four hours or so (and no sign of it dropping yet, disappointingly).

35.3C outside.

24.5C in the living room (getting that colder air in early, plus leaving the windows and doors closed all day has really helped).

24.7C in my bedroom (with the portable a/c, partly in the hallway outside)

32.4C in the back bedroom with the weather station server, and goodness knows what in the other back bedroom - the a/c hose runs through there and I've pretty much sealed the room off. It'll be well over 35C though.
