Yesterday's rainfall total at Edinburgh Gogarbank has been corrected downwards to 3.6 mm on this morning 6z raw SYNOP data, so we need to subtract 0.4 mm from the totals which I reported for this month, this winter and this year so far in my last post on this thread.

The total for this month and this year so far is therefore only 17.4 mm and the total for this winter so far is just 83.0 although this doesn't affect the total numbers of rain days in any way.

With high pressure looking set to take over the pattern next week, this is ahping up to be yet another below average month here in terms of rainfall. December was drier than average at Edinburgh Gogarbank which also had a drier than average summer and autumn during last year despite the very wet October and the fairly wet August which we had.

With the way that everything is going just now, this winter is therefore on course to end up being our third drier than average season in a row. If that happens and we then get a dry spring followed by a hot and dry summer, this is bound to raise a lot of concerns about a possible drought and water shortages here in Scotland later on this year.

I can also confirm that there is still no data coming through for the botanic gardens but by looking more closely at weatherobs.com, I can see that this particular station isn't the only one which has been affected by that. It turns out that there are quite a large number of stations dotted around the UK which have a WMO number that starts with 99... (the botanic gardens in Edinburgh is only one such station).

These incoporporate some major locations such as Balmoral here in Scotland which s often visited by HM the Queen and yet, there hasn't been updates for any of these stations at weatherobs.com since 11am on 3 January 2022 at the latest. With some of these sations, the last update was even earlier than that, going all the way back to around Christmas or possibly even eariler than that.

Note:

This very dry month and winter goes on here.

Since I last posted on here, the data for the botanic gardens in Edinburgh has come back online at weatherobs.com, but the raw data is in the newer BUFR format rather than the traditional SYNOP format. Raw SYNP data is a lot easier to decode than BUFR data, but BUFR data is the the actual format which is recommended by the WMO. Indeed, some countries have already migrated from SYNOP data to BUFR data, and that could well end up happening here in the UK as well before too long.

Because of that, I am now in the process of converting all of my procudures for reporting this data to use the BUFR data, but that is quite a big task which is going to take quite a lot of time.

As it is, the raw BUFR data for the botanic gardens in Edinburgh at weatherobs.com only goes back to 14 January whereas I only have raw SYNOP data for there up until 3 January 2022. This means that there is a lot of missing data for that particular station for between those two dates, and this means that I am unable to give a proper representation of what has been happening at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh during this month in terms of actual weather dta.

Furthermore, that is a situation which is not helped in any way by the fact that SEPA is currently still offline as I write.

Since my last report, there has still be no further rainfall here in Edinburgh during this exceptionally dry winter. The main purpose of this particular post is therefore just to confirm that SEPA is back online which means that I can now return to obtaining data from there, rather than having to rely on raw SYNOP or BUFR data.

This also means that I now have a much better idea of what is happening at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh in terms of rainfall as there is no missing data for that at SEPA.

Finally, this also means that I can go back to having every observation day starting and finishing at 09:00 UTC as before instead of 06:00 UTC, which brings that more in line with how the Met Office operates in terms of collecting weather observations data.

On that note, the latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank is as follows:

Totals for the most recent days

24 Hour Total Up To 9am GMT (09:00 UTC) this morning: 0.0 mm
Total since 9am (09:00 UTC) this morning: 0.0 mm (as at 6pm this evening)

Monthly Data

Number of Rain Days During This Month So Far: 5 (37.6% of 1991-2020 average)
Number of Dry Days During This Month So Far: 13

Seasonal Data

Total For This Winter So Far: 79.4 mm (38.0% of 1991-2020 average)
Number of Rain Days During This Winter So Far: 20 (53.9% of 1991-2020 average)
Number of Dry Days During This Winter So Far: 20

Annual Data

Total Amount During This Year So Far: 17.4 mm (2.2% of 1991-2020 average)
Number of Rain Days During This Year So Far: 5 (3.6% of 1991-2020 average)
Number of Dry Days During This Year So Far: 13

Notes

The data from SEPA was never going to be exactly the same as the raw SYNOP data due to the difference in the start and end of each observation day and the fact that both sets of data are gathered from different rain gauges, even though these are both within the same station.

In fact, the data from SEPA actually paints an even drier picture than the one which I was getting from the raw SYNOP data.

Even with all of the data for this particular station being available, the overall picture there is still even drier than the overall picture just now at Edinburgh Gogarbank.
