Not sure if to post this here or the earthquake thread but as it's magma causing it perhaps best here.

Things are really kicking of in Iceland at the moment with thousands of quake's since yesterday and a 5.4 recently. All centered in the area of the eruption earlier this year.

Looks like Icelandic volcano Grímsvötn is grumbling too. It's status has been changed to yellow today.

This has been off and on since about December last. Hopefully something will kick off but this could well be just one of the many false alarms in the last 7/8 months.

This recent activity is easily the most significant since last year’s eruption and for the first time since then the IMO have listed the chance of an eruption in coming days or weeks as significant. Apparently the magma is around 1km below the surface.

Just trying to gauge where that smoke is arising from and it seems to be north of a natural hot spring and west or northwest of the original volcano. This was an area that did see some very shallow earthquakes about 4 or 5 weeks ago. Interesting times ahead (hopefully)

Very likely you are right, but it does seem further west than main area of activity last year, but hard to judge from camera alone.

The whole outline of the lava field is now glowing making me think it's probably fresh lava, or more is erupting underneath.

And yes agreed Patrick it definitely has that Icelandic fissure look about it.

Ah, thanks. Definitely a new fissure so given its alignment. Also seems to be in a location where fresh lava flow will not threaten to close off main road along the south coast as was much feared during the first eruption. Though these are very much early days yet.
