I think that’s about right, except I think even Tuesday is too early. Unless there’s a very clear trend one way or the other, ie taking the battleground zone well north or, more likely at this stage, south, the finer details won’t be clear until much closer than that; maybe the Xmas Eve output.

There are a number of high res models and I’ve watched them disagree and chop and change really very close to T+0. Indeed it’s not unusual to see differences with the radar images in real time; that unexpected Sunday snow recently being a good example.

It’s worth noting that in a marginal set up, which this might be for some locations, things like elevation and precipitation intensity come into play. Rain to snow through evaporative cooling is not unknown and is more likely with slow-moving or stalling troughs, which might be the situation.

Great time of model watching coming up and yes it is definitely trending colder but we will have to wait until at least Thursday to see who might get some snow on Christmas Day. Where I stay from this mornings runs shows snow on 25th but showed very little on last nights runs. It will change again!!

UKMO run reduces the potential to a frosty cold snap...perhaps the reality will be somewhere between this and the GEM run

06Z ICON has also ticked a bit North up to 120hrs. In the general scheme of things the ICON is not a significant player but with the EC and GFS OP going a bit awry this morning it’s making pulling in this particular paper chase more challenging than usual (and all the significant cold spells in the last 20 years have had their moments in the run in).

Low to west of Ireland is a little further North so might be a milder op run. Little adjustments here and there over the next few days will make big differences

Interesting feature developing in the North Sea - shallow low which gives another dimension to potential outcomes

I think a voucher for plumbing services might be more important, Caz.

This still isn't too bad , chances of white Xmas's are always slim . 26th onwards is just fine

Looks like a poor op run as the low takes warmer 850’s north as it stalls over SE. Another option

Ah jingle balls. The 06z GFS bring back the idea of deep low over England with strong coastal winds on the big day, although UKMO and ECM are much less interested in that for now.

It’s not unusual to see the 06z GFS op run throw out a different option. It often does.

I notice public forecasters are very unwilling to stick their neck out and say anything about the Christmas period despite being pressed to do so, another measure of how uncertain the situation is, less than a week out.

FWIW the charts this morning show:

GFS06z goes mild in much of the UK a few days after Xmas. Question is whether that cold cluster in the GEFS will melt away faster than English snow.

The 00z GEFS ensemble t850 mean dropped below -5°C on Christmas Eve and stayed there until the 30th. The 06z set should be interesting to compare. As I said it’s really not unusual for the 06z GFS op run to throw out a different picture. It has done so countless times before.
