Quite a different evolution in terms of the chain of LP systems shown in the 12z has gone, to be replaced by a deep, stalling LP over Newfoundland, which is promoting another burst of WAA to reinforce the upper block in the Iceland area.

Looks like we got a decent cold snap:

https://www.theweatheroutlook.com/twodata/reanalysis.aspx?year=1881&month=Jan&dom=01&var=tmp&region=NA&level=850&hour=00

Nonetheless, people here would still be chuntering about the lack of snow and drip drip drip as the sun gets stronger through January. "If only we'd had this cold snap in December blah blah blah when the days were shorter".

The 18Z GFS mean has shunted the sliding trough 100 miles south again and some of the individual members (currently out to +180) are very tasty indeed.

There will be more wobbles to come and we’re not there yet but the ‘buzz’ that we could be on the cusp of a very rare event - snow on Christmas Day - is gaining momentum.

Snow piling into the East

Would be nice but as the only snow I've had in the last ten years was from the Beast from the East I won't hold my breath just yet! Always a chance but if I had a pound for every time I'd read this each winter in the last ten .........

Shocking trend eh?

Decent runs tonight. White Meadows is probably getting mislead by believing the 850Hpa's of -1 or -2c will bring rain. In normal circumstances that would be the case but that rule goes out of the window when you're tugging in a low level cold feed off a near frozen near continent.

A trip to Sevenoaks on Boxing Day for me, might see a bit of wet snow with any luck. Dew points not looking supportive of settling snow south of the midlands.

18Z GEFS out to 192 hours looks marginally better for cold but still a wide spread at least in terms of 850s. Haven’t looked at the 2m tables yet.

It's easy to forget that around just south of 0C will suffice when the continent is in a wintery grip with a favorable wind direction and DPs.

00z a huge upgrade for the north. Could be the snowiest Christmas in living memory if it panned out like that.
Let’s see if ECM starts to wobble this morning.

GEM on the other hand continues shifting the pattern north, leaving high risk of heavy rain & strong winds for many.
