Although Edinburgh has some shelter from this severe event compared to places like Peterhead, Aberdeen, St Andrew's and North Berwick I think there will be flying roof tiles and masonry in the old city on a busy Friday evening, quite worrying!

Now red for coastal areas from Peterhead to Durham. Surprised it took so long to issue.

This looks like it is winding itself up to be a nasty storm. Looking at the Red area, definite sting jet pattern.

That's insane! Thankfully unlikely to be that high but if it was it would be challenging the all time record for a lowland site in England.

i think we are well over for a storm like this. I think its been about 5 or 6 yrs, (maybe more) since we had a storm of this strength.

Of course some remote areas, probably have had storms like this, but arguably this interacts with a more inhabited area of GB

The focus is rightly on Eastern Scotland, but the wind that's due to hit North Wirral and North Wales is being missed, where gusts will be up around 90mph for a spell.

yeh - youve got to think there is some likely hood in this, as its coming straight off the sea, not over land.

I think I'm just outside the red bit but in any case, going to go and make sure there is no debris in my garden that can take off!!

Potential to turn red later I reckon.

Here in Edinburgh, we are just to the west of the red warning area, but I have at least one friend who lives in East L:othian which is inside that red warning area.

For them in particular, it is going to be very nasty later on. Here in Edinburgh, we are still in the amber warning area. Today started off on a bright and sunny note after the cold front had moved through during the early hours of this morning and though it has been fairly breezy up until now, it has been quite calm compared to what we are expecting later on, when I will expect it to be rather nasty even here.

EDIT

The wind is now picking up as I write, but that is probably still nothing compared to what we are expecting later on.

The media really should be taking this one by the scruff of the neck. I didn’t even get a news alert of Sky or the BBC.

The rarity of a red warning should be enough to issue start warnings to the public. Latest info suggest north wales and some parts of the NW should also be in the red zone

Schools have let the children out early here... winds had died down a bit. The calm before the storm! Have checked and I am in the red warning zone.

i think the location of the impact means it of muted interest for the media! i'm fairly sure most workers at the Guardian might think its a long way from Shoreditch.

It was the main story on BBC Scotland this lunchtime.
I suspect the latest grim COVID news has pushed it down the list

It was reported on the BBC1 news at 13:00 just now and quite high up the pecking order

They had a man in Aberdeen but unfortunately his line went down half way through

Aye, I've got a mate in Dunbar who's got a first floor flat two streets in from the seafront. He's right in the firing line for this

The wind at Edinburgh Gogarbank was already gusting up to 35.7 mph from the WNW as at 1pm this afternoon, and is continuing to strengthen as I write. In addition to that, it has now clouded over from the NE where there is quite a lot of precipitation just now.

The latest rain/snow radar maps show that most of the snow is over high ground, but even some coastal areas are seeing some sleet according to that.
