The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank (shown as station 1 below) and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh (shown below as station 2) is as follows:

Rainfall Total From 09:00 UTC (10am BST) Yesterday morning (as at 6am BST this morning): 7.2 mm at Station 1, 5.2 mm at Station 2.

Total Amount For May 2021 So Far: 59.4 mm (121.2 % of LTA) at station 1, 52.6 mm (107.6 % of LTA) at station 2
Number of Rain Days During May 2021 So Far: 7 (61.4 % of LTA) at station 1, 8 (82.3 % of LTA) at station 2
Number of Dry Days During May 2021 So Far: 2 at station 1, 2 at station 2

This means that a minimum total of least 5 more official rain days need to occur at Edinburgh Gogarbank between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average in terms of the number of rain days.

This also means that more rain has now fallen at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh during this month than the 1981-2010 May average for that particular station and so this month will now go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the actual rainfall amounts regardless of what happens there between now and the end of this month, and we're still not even halfway through this month yet.

Furthermore, a minimum total of least 2 more official rain days need to occur at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average in terms of the number of rain days.

Total Amount During This Spring So Far: 112.6 mm (74.6 % of LTA) at station 1, 93.0 mm (65.9 % of LTA) at station 2
Number of Rain Days During This Spring So Far: 19 (57.6 % of LTA) at station 1, 21 (74.2 % of LTA) at station 2
Number of Dry Days During This Spring So Far: 40 at station 1, 39 at station 2

Total Amount During This Year So Far: 266.4 mm (35.3 % of LTA) at station 1, 254.6 mm (36.1 % of LTA) at station 2
Number of Rain Days During This Year So Far: 47 (34.2 % of LTA) at station 1, 50 (40.3 % of LTA) at station 2
Number of Dry Days During This Year So Far: 59 at station 1, 56 at station 2

LTA = 1981-2010 average for the month, season or year in question at the particular station in question.

All of this data has been taken from SEPA with each observation day starting and ending on 09:00 UTC on each day.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

I don't keep rainfall records, and nearby Rothamsted isn't reporting accumulated totals at the moment, but I can say that we've had numerous showers in recent days and yesterday was dull and rather wet all day. Using my finger in the ground technique, I'd guess we're not far off 40mm of rain for the month so far.

Other people's experience further south and east appears to be quite different.

Edit to say just had another potent shower so add another 5mm to that.

I have just come back from holiday and make it 87mm but the garden has gone mad in my absence and a large piece of rhubarb was half hanging over the gauge so not sure how accurate that is.

I make it 99mm now Tim. I don't think it's going to be be accurate enough for the Metoffice but it's there or thereabouts!

105mm so far. I'm a big fan of rain but once we get past 100mm I start to think maybe you can have too much of a good thing. A bit of sunshine and warmth would be welcome now.
