Lots of talk on social media about the possible Atlantic megatsunami that the scientists say could happen if the island was to split and cause a landslide into the ocean. Very low risk though.

Excellent footage though. Off the top of my head it's the first time I've known one of the Canary volcanoes to erupt. Funnily enough I was thinking of when I visited Teide on Tenerife about 15 years ago earlier on...

It was a brilliant Horizon programme about the risk. If you like 'disaster porn' then it was great viewing 

Fortunately - or unfortunately if you prefer - the thesis has been debunked. Firstly, the chance of a huge chunk of La Palma sliding into the ocean is miniscule. Secondly, even if it did the resulting wave wouldn't be anything like the size the thesis claimed, and would largely dissipate before reaching the Americas.

AFAIK tsunamis only dissipate slowly in deep water. Maybe nothing as high as the 50m claimed in the second link but for comparison, Somalia received 4m high tsunami waves from the Sumatran earthquake 2800 miles away. That sort of size will still do nothing for prices of Miami real estate

The eruption is still going strong with regular explosions now audible on the YouTubes streams. Somewhat worryingly the more recent data suggestion that the ground is still inflating rapidly.

It was around 16cm yesterday morning. That is a massive amount of inflation and shows that magma is accumulating at a much faster rate than it is currently being released. Any inflation is bad news during an eruption.

Is this an the new vent that opened last night? 

Maybe another vent or two more will open in the coming days. Not great for those who live in the path of any lava flows, but nothing violent eruption wise.

Looks like a fairly narrow band, but eventually there will be no route between the north west and south west of the island without going all the way around the other side.

It turns out that it's cancellable at short notice - and they're actually looking for a helicopter flight over the eruption to augment their holiday

As far as I know the airport at La Palma remains closed due to ash currently. That aside the eruption is a bit unpredictable currently with a lessening of the intensity right now but an increase in quakes at around 10km. I’m not sure I would like to predict what will happen in the coming hours or days.

The eruption has recently restarted as vigorously as before, possibly a little more so. I feel it may be a little while before any decisions could be made about travel. Fingers crossed their plans can go ahead or that an acceptable alternative can be found.

Just a quick update to say that the lava flow reached the sea early this morning and continues to flow at a high rate. Earthquakes are also continuing at a depth that indicates further intrusion of magma in the region below the volcano.

If nothing else La Palma will be a slightly different shoe that it was before the eruption. Not unusual in the big picture for the Canaries, but the big picture usually takes many millennia.
