  • Roof surface area is pretty small compared with house volume, as it’s a tall thin townhouse

I hope that future architects take into account summer cooling in design. There’s plenty of architecture focusing on winter insulation but I’ve found most modern houses and flats get unbearably hot in summer, indeed the new builds near the river in my area are too hot even in spring and autumn because they all have huge solar gain windows and low ceilings.

FWIW, I've been cultivating a large viburnum in the front garden... it's around 12ft tall now and blocks the sun from the dining room (which is where I'm writing this - the ancient thermostat reckons it's 25C in here, so is likely to be the coolest room in the house.)

As for roof space, that's the perils of loft conversions (done to my bungalow in the 70s, before we moved in)... all that heat gets trapped in the new bedrooms instead. Indeed, I remember as a youngster finding out that if I stood on the bed the air near the ceiling was really warm compared to bed-level.

Hopefully changes will be made to reflect the increasing frequency of noteworthy heat in the UK. I note that the new gov't planning changes, while bad news for the countryside, do contain one good thing - all new streets to be treelined. That simple change should cool things somewhat, as my viburnum and your avenue trees do.

Just hit 31.0C upstairs as I was writing this... and it's fallen (quite rapidly) to 28.5C outside.

My office/bedroom never got as hot as I feared, as the cloud arrived just about the time the sun would have been hitting the windows. In fact it only really heated up around 6pm when the cloud broke up a bit and the sun started coming through again.

My indoor temperature is 29.8C. But would have been a lot hotter had the clouds not come over.

In the afternoon it’s streams through the windows and makes my living room feel like a greenhouse.

Saturday's here and with it an exceptionally warm night... it's 20.0C outside and that's the low so far here. As usual when it's sultry there's no wind whatsoever.

As for indoor temperatures,

My bedroom: 18.4C (and no doubt it'll warm up very quickly in there!)
Back bedroom: 27.4C
Kitchen: 26C
Shed: 25.5C
Dining room: 25C

One of the warmest starts to the day I've ever seen...

25C in my bedroom and I slept great. Late morning breakfast on the patio feels a bit too cool though.

Precisely 28.0°C in my south-facing 'office'. Have had blinds and curtains drawn and windows shut in all rooms to keep the hot air out (now just getting into the 31s °C outside).

Went out for a while, came back to find the temp hadn't changed. This blocking out the sun and air approach really works!

Bit hotter in the 'office' today, 29.8°C. Due to much more sunshine than yesterday. Tonight's going to be a tough'un.

19.8C upstairs, 20.5C downstairs
It has dropped quite a bit but it's been almost chilly here for 48 hours with NE wind, so still much warmer inside than out. (15.5C currently)

Wow - I can't even get it down to 19.8C at the moment even with a/c on full pelt!

26 in the kitchen and dining room, around 22 in my bedroom (the sun's been beating on the windows - curtains closed, of course - all afternoon, the a/c's been on in there for the past 2 hours), 27.1 in the back bedroom and 27.0 in the shed.

And that's on a day when it's "only" reached 26C or so... a combination of lingering heat from yesterday and the still-strong sun means things are still on the warm side.

(Tomorrow I'll be out at work all day, so it'll be over 30 I reckon by the time I get in!)

wow, you really live in an inferno! Airing the house this morning and then keeping everything shut worked really well with the ground floor at 24.5C and the first floor at 26C. Will open up everything again after 10pm.
