Boris might well have sung the chorus of the Royal Navy anthem, Hearts of Oak, and then shut up - the lyrics encapsulate his speech and have about as much of definite substance

Heart of Oak are our ships,
Jolly Tars are our men,
We always are ready: Steady, boys, Steady!
We'll fight and we'll conquer again and again.

I suppose he had to say something vaguely uplifting, but the emphasis was on vague, and it came out rather like a bland corporate press release, not at all gritty and to the point as per Churchill. However I think we had  better wait to see the detailed measures and digest them  tomorrow before judging whether he is actually taking sensible steps.

Even if those steps were to be positive, I would find it hard to forgive him, or credit him with the ability to take timely and decisive action when he was missing for a critical two weeks in March; doubly so if it is a true report that he used that time to sort out the details of his divorce when he should have had his focus on the national interest.

Then, of course, he surrounded himself with nonentities who could be relied on not to compete for his job, and were consequently afraid to take binding decisions when their boss was in hospital. (I'm thinking of a much earlier quarantine for air passengers)

From the BBC:

Agree. I would desperately love to check up on Dad, on his own, miles away; and my eldest- can't get through to him. the compulsion is there, believe me, but actually, that's not right, right now. Then, at the back, one household became two last week:'how about we do lunch, you do tea?" Seven children and 4 adults we estimate; the new moves could mean the whole terrace joins into an extended family.

Problem is, a huge number of people can't go back to work, because their work isn't allowed to open. The bulk of the retail industry, hospitality industry, travel industry... all forced to remain shut (quite rightly). 2) The advice to those unable to work from home has always been that they're alright to go to work.

1) I think there was certainly an element of that.

2) True and it's why I said the change is quite subtle. Nonetheless I expect it to have a big impact because now there is an actual push to get people back to work. Of course anyone in a high risk group will not be expected to return. That means confidentiality will be compromised because it will immediately become known which of your work colleagues have an underlying medical condition.

I can only speak for my school obviously.

I wish Russia would let us know their secret of keeping people alive. Another 11k new cases today, but less than a hundred reported dead again. So out of sync with other countries. Over hundred nurses and doctors dead. Some 'managing' to fall out of windows. Ministers going down with the virus like flies. A few weeks ago 9 hour ambulance queues waiting to go into hospitals when the new case rate was 4k. How on earth are they coping now. I suspect there are a lot of bodies in bags being taken somewhere and hidden/disposed of.

Footpaths and cycle routes have been getting a lot of use here, runners notably, at least on the recent warm days. I have observed some excellent and heart warming parenting, with families on scooters etc. Also some bloody neglectful parents letting their little beggars race about unsupervised. Probably too horrible to have them at home! What will they be like to 10 years time? R.

What did people expect in an 8 minute speech? Seriously.

It was an overview, an outline, nothing more and nothing less. The details will be fleshed out tomorrow as has been stated.

The people who need to return to work tomorrow will have been informed a while ago. Liaisons are ongoing between the government and affected businesses.

People who are confused by his address tonight are either nigh on braindead or wilfully ignorant.

We are all adults but it seems some people need their arses wiping for them and expect a personal itinerary of what they as an individual should be doing on a daily basis.

Was just chatting to a member of my family who is a school headteacher in the UK.

They've been trying to plan out how to re-open. She reckons no more than 6 kids per classroom if the 2m limit is to be enforceable. Staggered playtime and other measures. Difficulties with lunch hour and so on. They need to sort out how toilet hygiene and staff PPE will work. Some parents will refuse to send their kids anyway unless their safety is "absolutely guaranteed". A number of members of staff apparently very scared to come back. Plus the unions may be an issue. It sounds like a complete nightmare to be honest.

With so many kids separated into many classrooms, are there enough teacher's to go around?

Even Hodges isn't impressed.

Edit: There will have to be a "relaunch" within a few days I now reckon.

Yes those are very good points I guess we would call it a full risk assessment of the associated risk ie how likely not likely  v very often or very little v outcomes what control measures can we implement to make it workable with acceptable risk.

My work won't be re-opening any time soon until they have proper consultation on distancing etc.

But eventually, yes, London will have to manage public transport and travel to work. The planning should already be under way.

I can't see how this can be right, as it implies an average of less than 1,600 per day. I know it's only England, and I'm guessing it's only Tier 1, but even then it seems too low.

Issues around public transport, a requirement to go to work for millions, and fear of losing ones job.

Very possibly a recipe for worry, confusion and possibly getting R above 1.

Is Boris and his Cabinet going to man all the over ground & underground stations? Or patrol the buses?

Think about it.

Your comment above is one of the most wrong-headed Ive seen on here for a while, and a perfect example of blind faith leading to defective thinking.

That's another problem - you will need a lot of teachers and some of them can't or won't come in. She seemed to think it was very touch and go whether they had enough staff to actually re-open, even for a small subset of the kids.
