But I've provided the information : for whatever reason there seems to be a lag between the minimum and the greatest impact on our Northern Hemisphere atmosphere (and it does seem to be limited to the northern part).

We are a maritime thermally lagged climate and the astronomical calendar sets the seasons most effectively for us.

Notwithstanding recent examples, December is still on average a couple of degrees or so colder than March. Therefore it makes sense to have all of December included in 'winter', rather than just one third of it (and two thirds of March) as under the astronomical definition.

Here, I think Jan 13 was colder than Mar 13, and the snow events were comparable (perhaps Jan just shading it)

Missed out on the snow in Feb/Mar 18.

Have had a few other falls in Jan since 2013, but nothing to write home about.

Over the last 20 winters, as I said in another thread, I think December* wins the award for 'best snowy month', although January & March not that far behind. Feb is the big anomaly.

* as far as I can remember, these are the December snowfalls since the turn of the century in MBY:

Late Dec 00 (c15cm, stayed on ground 3-4 days)

Late Dec 01 (only around 1-2cm, but froze and stayed on ground until into new year

Xmas Day 04 (heavy snow showers through late morning into afternoon left about 5cm covering, which froze and stayed a coupel of days)

Mid Dec 09 (accumulation of snow from heavy showers in run-up to Xmas, lasted until 27th)

Mid Dec 10 (had to wait through the super-spell, but great fall a week or so before Xmas, stayed until almost new year)

Mid Dec 11 (only a dusting, but unexpected festive boost, even if it was gone by the following day)

Boxing Day 14 (rainfall turned to heavy snowfall on the evening and put down a good 5cm, although washed away overnight)

That's 3 falls of 10cm+, 2 of 5cm+, 2 lighter falls. A hit rate of 7 in 19 Decembers (including snow on the ground on Xmas Day 3 times) is a hit rate I'm perfectly happy with.

My fiancee from UAE who never seen snow or experience cold weather really love to see snow but sadly I told her that UK don't offer this at all and so rare to get snow here as we got nasty Atlantic next do us preventing us from getting snow only if winds come from the east.  Told her we have better chance to see snow in the Alps or Cyprus's Troodos mountain which currently stand 1m deep now.  Funnily that for her she feel very cold in Sharjah when it dropped below 20C with rain and hailstorm they got last Sunday, I watched the video and how amazing the cloud structure there than here.  Lot of flooding too which is unusual for UAE to have a wet winter with rain very often.  Cyprus also have a very wet winter with new record 113 days of rain fell for 2019 while first time to hit 100 days barrier was in 2018 at 101, never reach 100 days before.  It seem the climate changing are gathering faster everywhere while Australia suffer with bush fires.

I told her we will go to Switzerland as she always dream to go there or Cyprus to see the snow up higher levels as now Europe low land are not getting snow either, Even Toronto not having a cold winter too.   When I went there in Xmas with temperatures around pleasant 24-27C in Sharjah, UAE I told her that those temperatures are like that in the UK during summer month and she happy to hear that as she don't like the extreme heat of 33-34C at nights to 40-44C in summer.  I was there in September with temps around 30C at nights to 40C at day time, so nice for me to feel it and went swimming on roof top of the hotel, same heat feeling from my time in Cyprus before.

But main thing she happy to experience the extreme heat in Death Valley Furnace Creek Visitor center where you can take picture of yourself next to their famous temperature white display screen which you can google it online, someone stood next to the 131F figure.  She know my favorite place is Furnace Creek and Nicosia, Cyprus.

A solar minimum does not guarantee a cold winter.

During the last really deep solar minimum before 2008, the winters of 1911-14 were pretty unremarkable and overall mild. They all had CETs of 5.0 or greater.   The great winter of 1916-17 was close to solar maximum

And if you look at the great winters of the 20th century, most were near solar maximum. Even 1962-63 did not occur at or after a solar minimum.

The Russians are moaning that the US are to blame for their unusually mild winter.    Presumably though the US, as our allies, are only doing it in retaliation for the Russians making our winter so mild with their own climate weapons?

I've often wondered what it would be like to invent a 'high pressure generating machine' that could produce a huge blocking high anywhere you wanted it.... and see the arguments it would create on where you positioned it.

That'd be kinda boring though, though as you say, people arguing about who would next get a go of the machine would be fun!

I feel like I'm getting to the sort of age where I don't care anymore.

This winter would have been a nightmare for me just 5 years ago.

Patience though, we all know the back end of winter tends to have a sting these days.

Not if you centred it about 500 miles north of the British Isles in winter!

I honestly couldn’t give a monkeys this year.

I was distracted by politics in December so I wasn’t bothered about the models and the weather, and that feeling has kinda lasted into January too.

I honestly can’t remember the last time I was so disinterested in our winter weather.

Oddly, I feel a fair bit like that, too. I'm sure I'll be giddy if we do get some great weather, but I've had a growing sense of any wintry weather being far 'better' to receive in December and early January. The later in the season and into March, the less excited I get.

I'll located it around 500 miles NW of the British Isles, then. And use the machine's 'dark twin' to generate a huge low over the North Sea.

For me some wintry weather would have been a nice distraction from all that.

Least I have spent less time on my phone this winter though and more time paying attention to the family.

I know the feeling Joe it has been the most boring winter so far i can ever remember only 3 air frosts the last being 10th Dec and not a flake of snow or anywhere near to snow.

If you read the Met update stating more of the same that goes upto mid Feb leaving just 2 weeks of winter remaining !!
