I know that there may well be a number of people here who would much rather carry the summer moaning thread on for a while, since September can in certain years end up being like an extension to our summer, and since the astronomical summer doesn't actually end until the time and date of the Autumn Equinox on around 23 September.

However, the latest model output has indicated that we have some fairly autumnal weather coming up. There are many people on this forum who will talk about autumnal weather at any time of the year, but it is only now that we have now entered the very time of the year when I actually look for autumnal weather.

By that, I mean plenty of Atlantic storms, especially later on and hopefully, the first official air frost in this part of the world during October. For those reasons, I am no longer bothered about the temperatures refusing to rise during the day as I would be during the summer.

Furthermore, there is always a clamour on this forum to get the winter moaning thread underway during November, well before the start of the actual meteorological winter itself. That makes the autumn moaning thread, the shortest lived thread in any given year, out of the all of the seasonal moaning threads. However, it doesn't need to be that way.

I am aware that there will be various members of this forum who will disagree with me, but I believe that this is as good a time as any to start off the autumn moaning thread for the reasons which I have just mentioned, and that is what I am doing now.

Unlike the summer moaning thread though, this one won't double up as a gloating thread as there isn't really much that you can gloat about anyway, when it comes to the autumn. If there is, anyone is always free to start a new thread for that or discuss that in any general discussion thread for this autumn which may well turn up.

It's been unusually dry down here. Gloat - good for getting out and about. Moan - trying to keep the garden watered

A stunningly fine sunny morning, already 21 c at 10.15 am but the 55% h is keeping the dp at a fresh feeling 12 c.

No complaints from me, apart from my parched looking lawn.

There would be plenty to gloat about if we actually got a decent autumn with a fair amount of sunny crisp weather and cool nights that result in brilliant tree colour but we never do nowadays.

I prefer to see generally warm conditions prevail for the first few weeks of September with sub 10C nights. Thereafter predominately cooler with the first ground frost by end of September and air frost by mid-October. There should still be occasional warm, sunny days.

Alas the dross we get these days is almost the total opposite of that. Cool/average rubbish prevailing up to the Equinox then mild cloudy and damp grot sets in to ruin October. Double digit mins throughout October have been the scourge of 21st Century autumns

Nothing to gloat about the weather today. It is more like 1st October. Cloudy, cool, windy, threatning pointless drizzly rain and just 13.1C at what should be the warmest part of the day

Septembers since 2014 have been dreadful for warmth, in sharp contrast to the decade prior to that. Only 2016 has managed to exceed the normal monthly max and the signs are not good for this year managing to hit around 22C either  It really has been dreadful with 2015 and 2017 failing to reach even 20C and the absolute max for 2017 was the lowest since 1992 yet we had virtually zero cold nights that month with a hideous run of 12C mins towards the end of the month. Nothing worse than getting months that lack extremes of warmth or cold but that is precisely what has defined this awful decade

That's not the true astronomical summer- the official definition is a poorly-thought-out misnomer. Astronomical by definition comes from the prefix astro- , meaning to do with stars and celestial objects, in this case the sun. The astronomical summer half of the year is the half when the sun's zenith is highest in the sky- in the N hemisphere that is from shortly after 21st March to roughly the same date in September.

The mid point is the summer solstice. Therefore, truly astronomically rather than mythologically astronomically, the seasons can be mapped against this- roughly, a month and a half either side of the solstice marking the boundaries. Thus, summer by this definition began around 5th May, and ended around 5th August. We are almost a month into this unofficial, but certainly not arbitrary, autumn.

Glad that Autumnal weather has started. Good view of starry skies last night. Do not need hot spells, just keep away the under 10c temperatures for a while.  The leaves and seeds are falling and being a nuisance.  Time to start packing the shorts back in the sideboard drawers.

This has to be the most consistently horrible summer half of the year (April to September) since at least 2002.

April was ruined by North Sea cloud, May was horrendous and the summer was poor. September was the last chance to muster up one decent sunny and settled month but it is beyond abysmal.

It’s just the same revolting rubbish day in day out. Masses of cloud and pathetic drizzly and depressing rain that amounts to very little but is enough to prevent any sort of outdoor activity. Since the 10th August the max daily rain total has been 3.6mm yet there has been only nine fully dry days. It’s just unreal. I’ve never known anything so pitiful and unrelentingly pathetic in all my years of observing the weather.

No sunny day since 27th August and we have now completed yet another 7-day spell with rain every day. The East coast climate was never this unrelentingly putrid and soul destroying. It’s like being in an uninhabitable part of the Highlands when all there is day-in-day out is cloud and rain ad nauseum. I can’t express in words just how hacked off I am at this phenomenally bad filth. Even with full blown Autumn in mid-October it shouldn’t be as bad as this.

I don’t know how farmers are surviving up here because all that a climate in which it rains every single day, is suitable for is sheep farming and that’s about it

Would using a mower not be better?

I know that this is off topic, but I can guess from that why there is a connection between sheep and a certain football team from up there (at least, according to the opposing team's fans).

The sheep analogy is perfect for the current weather as it's the equivalent of being served mutton stew for dinner ever single day

I thought last September was bland and indeed can’t remember anything about it. Even looking at the weather records failed to bring back any memories. This one is taking the blandness to a whole new level. It is excruciatingly awful for a weather enthusiast to have to endure this garbage repeatedly month after month.

No day has recorded 10mm despite it raining almost every day and the outlook shows very little other than more dire patchy rain and drizzle. Not very sunny either. We can’t get one day with just fair weather cloud at most. Every single day sees masses of ugly cloud at some point even when little or none is forecast.

There is absolutely zero sign of any late season warmth and we are on track to fail to even reach 20C for the third September in five years – the same number as there were in 20 years prior to that. What used to be considered exceptionally poor is now the norm.

The worst aspect is the continuation of the Weekend Curse. Last weekend saw the two coldest days of the month so far, by some margin, and today is the most revolting day so far. It is utterly vile. Grey, cold windy with more nuisance value rain that will add to nothing yet make the day a write-off

These relentless crap Saturdays alone are making this one of the most detestable years I've known even without the unrelentingly bland weather. The most sun we've managed on any Saturday since the start of April has been a woeful 71% on 22nd June and even that had a horrid couple of hours of solid overcast in the middle of the day. It's just beyond a joke - the same nasty rubbish week in week out

The outlook is just soul destroying. I could find more of interest in a copy of the Bible written in Russian than in this weather vacuum hell:

You think this can’t go on for ever and we must get something memorable and interesting soon but it just gets worse and worse. Day after day of nondescript temperatures and weather.

And yet if there were days over 10mm you'd be complaining about how wet it is. You will never be happy.

It really should be a ‘moaning and gloating’ thread because I have no complaints either.  Another lovely start to the day with not a cloud in sight!  There was a nip in the air early morning but the sun is showing its strength now.

As for rain, regardless of regional stats, it really has been quite dry locally for months. Farmers are still irrigating fields, probably potatoes, carrots and sugar beet.

Up until yesterday, our weekend forecast was for mostly sunny, with some cloud bubbling up each afternoon. Been the same for days.

Then yesterday, out of nowhere, the forecast changed to having a front move in Sunday to totally ruin the day. Rain on and off all through the day.

What a load of crap.

This didn't exactly come out of thew blue though. Today has been gradually downgrading all week. A week ago we were on 22C and sunny for today then the expected temps/sun dropped off. But you are right, it was only on Friday that any significant amount of rain was forecast.

Light rain/drizzle this morning, think it's actually stopped for the moment but it will be back and it won't be shifting anywhere in a hurry as this front is just strung out across nothern England and won't budge. What a load of crap indeed.
