Reading clouded over pretty much bang on lunchtime today so assume that is the cause of the lower reading. Everyone complained about it just as they were going out for lunch, and not just about having to put up with those who have descended on the town for the Festival this weekend. Looks like this weekend will certainly be better from a UV perspective at least 😉

Reading only managed 5.4 today I suspect due to pollutants/ haze from the continent?

Chilton managed 6.2 (higher ground) and Camborne 6.7.

Since last post, Reading's readings:

5.2   5.8    5.5    5.7

Although these class as moderate UV, they're still at the top end of that range, meaning it does still feel like summer in the afternoons.

5.7 is good for September as 5s are not that common and restricted to the first half of the month.

In Reading's record, back to 1993,the latest 5+ readings were 13th and 14th Sep 2003 (both 5.0) and 12th Sep 2011 (5.2).

The highest readings were in reverse order:

5.8   5.9.2007

6.0   5.9.1993

6.2  1.9.2008

6.4   3.9.1993.

The highest frequency of 5+ days was 1999 with 7 days of 5 or more.

Looks like Camborne reached a staggering 6.8 today, 2nd September.

https://uk-air.defra.gov.uk/data/uv-index-graphs

Clear, dry air and a cleansing wind, no doubt. It was a frisky cool night last night.

Edit: it matched this on 28.8.2012 but I can't find a higher September reading since 1993. Could this be a UK September record?

Edit: just checked Chilton, @6.5 so comparable. Reading not publishing yet; doubting their eyes!

Reading offline.

The sun is as high now as at the end of March. However, lower ozone at this time of year means a run of 5s is up for grabs in these conditions- but is very unusual. The next few days offer plenty of opportunities for this and it could well be a memorable UV spell for the time of year.

I don't have any UV readings to refer to sadly, but I've been impressed by the intensity of the sun here this weekend. Any bare skin exposed to the sun has actually started to feel a bit overheated after 15 mins or so.

A combination of deeply clear skies, very light, often absent winds and peak temps in the 20s have served to lend mid-September a mid-May feel. I welcome that with open arms; I believe that a change to autumnal weather is best saved until at least mid-October .

The "max 2"s can't come soon enough for me.

Chilton 4.3 yesterday

Reading 4.0

Camborne only 2.0

We've had an amazing sunshine September so far. At Chilton (due to Reading's break):

UV 6+ on 3 days

UV 5+ on 10 days

UV 4+ on 18 days (so up to yesterday, only 3 days had <4). Quite something.

Chilton seems more reliable than Reading ATM.

Also, the air seems less polluted- at 123m and relatively rural in S Oxfordshire, it's a truer reflection of UV potential in S England.

So a shift, but with regular comparisons in other sites, including Camborne.

The last week at Chilton (since last report):

4.0  4.2  4.0  3.9  4.1  3.6  3.8

Despite all the wet weather, late September is delivering nicely.
