looks like the south coast is taking a right pasting tonight.
Elevated storms are funny beasts - the dispersion of sound can travel long distances, or get completely muffled. I've seen intense lightning and heard no thunder at all in these situations.
They are indeed. I'm still seeing the occasional flicker from +100 miles away, which is fairly standard for here.
My curious query regarding the audibility of thunder has been answered. I've noticed a cell has popped up 24 miles away near Tenterden.
Google tells me that thunder can normally be heard up to 15 miles away, possibly as much as 30 miles in special circumstances.
Constant (every 1 to 2 seconds) lightning to the south. Switching to lightning.org for some midnight fun !!
Looking at the sferics in the channel it could be south Devon next in the firing line.
Beautiful lightning display, mostly cloud to cloud and about 2 per second! Honestly, amazing!
Add: still 24C and I just can't go to bed!
Great view south in Portsmouth harbour towards the IOWhttp://www.hmswarrior.org/webcam
Wow that's a proper storm right now!
Looking at the radar I should be in the firing line in about 10 mins....
I can hear it coming now, and the sky is lit up almost constantly to the south. Not surprising looking at this lot!
Wow its all gone bang. Didn’t even get an hour’s sleep.
Heavy rain, frequent lightning and thunder. Radar looks very impressive.
Lightning pulsing across the sky in waves from east to west along the storm front.
That was a cracker of a storm. As it approached it was just constant thunder like a freight train. Then some decent C-Gs as it passed nearby and then some loud cracks of thunder on the other side. Moving off now although it looks like there is more to follow if it stays intact!
This was what passed overhead...
Just had one large cell pass, masses of non stop lightning and thunder but all high based no fork or CGs so disappointing, the only real excitement was a scary few minutes during the peak of the storm when the wind went passed like a freight train which made me and my boy hang on to the nearest post on our gazebo and a few minutes of torrential rain. still, there's more on the radar so hopefully will see something a bit nearer the ground.
After garage got flooded Friday night, could do without a repeat
Seems to be mostly to my west but now raining a bit
