A few hours ago, it was all looking fairly rosy here as the temperature was below freezing at two of my three local stations. Since then though, there has been a lot more cloud and a slight breeze around which has caused the temperature to jump back up above freezing at all of my three local stations (with the temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank even going above yesterday's reported maximum for there) with all of that frost which had been around all day, now having disappeared altogether.

There has also been some showers nearby as well, but as these have broken up just at the point where they have just about reached here, this also means that we are back to our usual borefest as well with nothing which is even remotely interesting in terms of our weather, actually happening now.

Meanwhile, the temperature at midnight was 1.2°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 2°C at Edinburgh Airport and 0.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

From near -5 at midnight it was +1 before dawn with a little snow, then back down just below freezing now it's cleared away.

Sounds like a recipe for icy roads.

A lot of cloud has come and gone throughout the night and at the moment,it is clouding over from the west once again. Nevertheless, there is some frost around just now although as far as the early hours of this morning is concerned, it is only at Edinburgh Airport and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh where an official air frost has actually been recorded.

This is still important though because this means that there are now more official air frosts during this month at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh than the 1981-2010 January average for that station which means that regardless of what happens between now and the end of this month, this month will go down as being frostier than average at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. However, there still needs to be another three days with an official air frost being recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank between now and the end of this month for the same thing to happen there, and today does not look like being one of those three required days.

Last night's overnight minimum temperature was -1.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank (where that minimum temperature occurred very early during yesterday evening), -3°C at Edinburgh Airport and -1.4°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8am this morning was 0.3°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, -1°C at Edinburgh Airport and -0.6°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

No sign of the sun breaking through.  A frosty night followed by cloud coming over at daybreak without a change in the air usually results in a pretty cold day.

The clouds have broken up a bit more and the Sun is shining here in Edinburgh just now, but nothing in the way of sunshine has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon and all of this morning's frost has now disappeared as well.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 12 noon was 2.3°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 2°C at Edinburgh Airport and 2.3°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
