With high pressure in charge just now, I will expect this thread to be rather quiet for a while at least, and I don't have anything to report here just now. However, this thread may yet get busier later on if the weather becomes more unsettled over time. If you do get any rain during this month, this is the place to report those precipitation amounts regardless of whether this is just in the form of rain, or of snow where the amount has been converted to its equivalent rainfall amount.

New year's day saw 0.3 mm here. That all-too-common (these days) blocked weather pattern again locked in place so a mainly dry start to the New Year.

So far, it has been completely dry here during this year so far, thanks to an intense area of high pressure which is sitting right on top of here.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this takes the total for this month so far to 0.0 mm, the total for this winter so far to 37.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 0.0 mm as at midnight.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, this takes the total for this month so far to 0.0 mm, the total for this winter so far to 33.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 0.0 mm as at midnight.

So far, this is quite a big contrast to last year when January was our only wetter than average month during what was still a drier than average winter overall. Now, it is looking increasingly likely that this will now go down as our third drier than average winter in a row to an even greater extent than what was the case last winter, unless we suddenly get a massive deluge during the second half of this winter and it is difficult to see just now, where that is going to come from.

In fact, we haven't even had a single wetter than average season here since that rather wet summer of 2017 which produced our wettest June on record and at the moment, that record is looking set to remain intact after this winter as well.

In the end, a total of 0.6 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 1.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that, a total of 0.2 mm of rain has fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 9am this morning with the botanic gardens in Edinburgh remaining completely dry so far as of that same time.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this takes the total for this month so far to 0.8 mm, the total for this winter so far to 38.6 mm and the total for this year so far to 0.8 mm as at 9am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, this takes the total for this month so far to 2.0 mm, the total for this winter so far to 35.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 2.0 mm as at 9am this morning.

Clearly, this has been a very dry winter here so far and the general outlook isn't looking particularly wet either.

0.4 mm of drizzle here today brings my total up to just 2.2 mm. Surface conditions very wet tho' due to surfaces being colder, after the recent frosts, than the milder saturated air now in place along with the fine drizzle.

Interesting fact: we are well into absolute drought in London. Last rain of over 0.2mm at Heathrow was Boxing Day (about 0.3mm) and last rain over 1mm was 23rd Dec. So 20 days of absolute drought by end of today.

Drought probably broken tomorrow. Good while it lasted, I had a chance to mow the lawn last weekend.

It’s still looking fairly dry up to the end of January. 11m in London and only 6mm in Edinburgh per the 06z GFS, although that was a particularly dry run.

So we are half way through winter. Here in South Edinburgh we've recorded only 36.5mm since 1st December (figures from SEPA rainfall station at Swanson, south Edinburgh)
As for January only 1.7mm has been recorded up to 9 am this morning (15/1/19)

It's roughly about the same here in the north of Edinburgh as well with the figures remaining unchanged from my last report on this thread. Of course, we are halfway through what is supposed to be "winter" although until now, we haven't even really had any winter (that however, is a subject for a different thread on this forum) and the fact that we've had so little rainfall is indicative of just how boring and uneventful, this so-called "winter" has been until now as I am always pointing out on the moaning thread and the daily CC threads.

What is really concerning though, is the fact that SEPA's water scarcity reports have been consistently telling us that this winter was when we needed to be getting that much rainfall which is needed to make up last year's deficit and help to raise those depleted groundwater levels in order to avoid any further issues arising from that later on this year, especially if we then go on to experience a dry spring followed by another hot and dry summer. The fact that we've not been getting this rainfall at such a crucial time is therefore, very worrying indeed.

I think that we might get some rain over the next few days though, although I'm still not expecting that to amount to a great deal. Out of my three local stations, rainfall is only recorded at two of them (Edinburgh Gogarbank and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh) So far, the botanic gardens in Edinburgh has been the wetter of those two stations during this month up until now with Edinburgh Gogarbank being the wetter of those two stations during this complete non-event which is known as this "winter".

A total of 1.4 mm of rain has fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning along with 2.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

These totals are still fairly small, but they are enough to make today, the wettest day of this year so far at both of those stations and more than double the rainfall amounts for this month so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this takes the total for this month so far to 2.6 mm, the total for this winter so far to 40.4 mm and the total for this year so far to 2.6 mm as at 8am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, this takes the total for this month so far to 4.8 mm, the total for this winter so far to 38.6 mm and the total for this year so far to 4.8 mm as at 8am this morning.
