Clear and much colder than of late.

Despite the lack of frosts during this winter so far in comparison with the 1981-2010 averages for that, we haven't had long to wait for our first official air frost of 2019 as an official air frost has now been recorded at all three of my local stations for the first time this year.

Meanwhile, the temperature at midnight was -1.6°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, -4°C at Edinburgh Airport and -1.6°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

A long last, we have something which we have seen very little of during this winter so far, and that is a cold and frosty morning with an official air frost at all three of my local stations.

This has happened as a result of us being under a very intense area of high pressure which according to the various charts which I have seen here on TWO, appears to be centred right on top of this very location.

This has resulted in a pressure reading at Edinburgh Gogarbank of 1045.9mb as at 8am this morning and what is interesting is that the rain radar maps show some showers running into the east coast of England on an easterly breeze, just to the south of where this area of high pressure is actually centred just now.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8am this morning was -4.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, -6°C at Edinburgh Airport and -3.6°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which makes last night, the coldest night of this winter so far at all three of my local stations.

Coldest winter morning so far at -6 C. I think frost will persist all day if skies stay this clear.

This awful winter takes a further turn for the worse as the tedium steps up a gear in the form of anticyclonic gloom.

Completely sunless so far in 2019 and hasn't fallen below 2.3C all night or indeed all week

Mostly thin low cloud with the sun breaking through occasionally, calm, dry.

5.4*C after a minimum of 4.2*C at 5.30am.

76%RH; 1040.5mb rising slowly.

Nice to see the garden drying out after two months of being mostly damp.  (See my post in the Moaning thread!)

Crap day today. Supposed to see sun breaking through but we're under stubborn cloud which if anything has gotten thicker through the morning.

Bright & fair with sunny breaks and partial cloud, seems that them thar hills to my north is having the effect of filtering out the low cloud under a north wind. As a result, the 7.4 c & 76% h felt spring-like mild in the low winter sunshine when I popped out to get the papers (I only needed a cardie and jogging bottoms).

A completely sunny morning means that a total of 1.6 hours of sunshine has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon.

It is still very cold though with plenty of frost still lingering around, especially in those north-facing shaded areas which the Sun can't get to.

Last night's overnight minimum temperature was -4.3°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, -6°C at Edinburgh Airport and -3.6°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which makes last night, the coldest night of this winter so far at all three of my local stations.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 12 noon was 1.3°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 0°C at Edinburgh Airport and -0.9°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh where it is still technically possible for today to go down as an official ice day, although that is unlikely to actually happen.

Still 0 C here at 1pm with a hard frost persisting. The local ponds are frozen hard. It's glorious with clear blue skies and views across as far as The Trossachs in the west and Bass Rock out to the east. A great day to be out 🌞

Anyway and back on topic, an almost completely sunny afternoon here in Edinburgh means that in the end, a total of 4.4 hours of sunshine was recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank. That makes today, our sunniest day of this year so far by quite a distance and it means that this year has actually got off to a fairly sunny start here with that happening as part of a winter which has also been sunnier than average so far up until this point in time in this part of the world.

Today's maximum temperature was 2.6°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 2°C at Edinburgh Airport and 0.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This means that there will be no official ice day here in Edinburgh today, but the frost which formed during last night has failed to clear away all day with quite a bit of that still around.

As it has turned out as well, the temperatures weren't above freezing for long and with the Sun having now gone down, an official air frost has already set in once again at Edinburgh Gogarbank and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh although there is more in the way starting to appear now which could yet result in that frost not being around for very long.

In the meantime though, the temperature at 4pm this afternoon was -0.9°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 0°C at Edinburgh Airport and -1.6°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Although only measured in full degrees, looks like an iceday around the Glasgow area also with low wintery cloud fog and mist and temps dipping again.
