A total of 4.0 mm of rain has fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning, along with 2.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This brings to an end, a dry spell which lasted for 4 days at Edinburgh Gogarbank, and for 3 days at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes this month's total so far to 37.2 mm, the total for this winter so far to 37.2 mm and the total for this year so far to 615.6 mm as at 8am this morning.
For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes this month's total so far to 33.4 mm, the total for this winter so far to 33.4 mm and the total for this year so far to 596.8 mm as at 8am this morning.
There are only two days left of both this month and this year to go, but we have only had just over half of our average December rainfall so far during this month at both of those stations.
This month is therefore going to end up being substantially drier than average at both of those stations both for the actual rainfall amounts and the number of official rain days.
The same is true for the whole year as well, although just one more official rain day needs to be recorded over the last two days of this year at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, in order for this year to go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the number of official rain days. Having said that though, there are no guarantees that this will actually happen even when the latest forecasts are taken into account.
Since it has been stated in SEPA's water scarcity reports that adequate winter rainfall would be critical in determining how well ground-water levels in the east of Scotland recover from the summer droughts which happened earlier on this year, the fact that we have had this dry start to the winter is very worrying indeed, from that aspect of things.
