A total of 4.0 mm of rain has fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning, along with 2.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This brings to an end, a dry spell which lasted for 4 days at Edinburgh Gogarbank, and for 3 days at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes this month's total so far to 37.2 mm, the total for this winter so far to 37.2 mm and the total for this year so far to 615.6 mm as at 8am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes this month's total so far to 33.4 mm, the total for this winter so far to 33.4 mm and the total for this year so far to 596.8 mm as at 8am this morning.

There are only two days left of both this month and this year to go, but we have only had just over half of our average December rainfall so far during this month at both of those stations.

This month is therefore going to end up being substantially drier than average at both of those stations both for the actual rainfall amounts and the number of official rain days.

The same is true for the whole year as well, although just one more official rain day needs to be recorded over the last two days of this year at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, in order for this year to go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the number of official rain days. Having said that though, there are no guarantees that this will actually happen even when the latest forecasts are taken into account.

Since it has been stated in SEPA's water scarcity reports that adequate winter rainfall would be critical in determining how well ground-water levels in the east of Scotland recover from the summer droughts which happened earlier on this year, the fact that we have had this dry start to the winter is very worrying indeed, from that aspect of things.

In the end, a total of 4.2 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 2.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that, a total of 0.4 mm of rain has fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning along with 0.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes the total for this month so far to 37.8 mm, the total for this winter so far to 37.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 616.2 mm as at 8am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes the total for this month so far to 33.8 mm, the total for this winter so far to 33.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 597.2 mm as at 8am this morning.

If the latest forecasts are correct, that might well now be it in terms of rainfall for both this month, and for 2018.

Now that we have just entered another new month, I can now confirm that my final total for December comes out as 37.8 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 33.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this is 59.4% of the 1981-2010 average for that station whilst the botanic gardens in Edinburgh had 55.6% of its 1981-2010 average rainfall during December.

Overall, this shows that in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, December was a drier than average month at both of those stations in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

In addition to that, Edinburgh Gogarbank had 8 official rain days during December and this shows that it was a drier than average month there in terms of the number of official rain days since that amounts to 62.0% of the 1981-2010 average. It is a similar story at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which had 9 official rain days with that amounting to 78.9% of the 1981-2010 average.

I can also confirm that the total for the winter so far is 37.8 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 33.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at midnight going into 1 January 2019.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this is 19.5% of the 1981-2010 average whilst the botanic gardens in Edinburgh has had 19.3% of its 1981-2010 average during the winter so far as at midnight going into 1 January 2019.

In addition to that, Edinburgh Gogarbank has had 8 official rain days during this winter so far which is 22.0% of the 1981-2010 average whereas the botanic gardens in Edinburgh has had 9 official rain days during this winter so far which is 27.0% of the 1981-2010 average.

Since we have just entered a new year, I can confirm that over 2018, Edinburgh Gogarbank had 616.2 mm of rain which is 81.7% of the 1981-2010 average whilst the botanic gardens in Edinburgh had a total of 597.2 mm of rain during 2018 which is 84.8% of the 1981-2010 average.

In addition to that, Edinburgh Gogarbank had 123 official rain days during 2018 which is 89.6% of the 1981-2010 average whereas the botanic gardens in Edinburgh had 124 official rain days during 2018 which is 99.8% of the 1981-2010 average.

This means that 2018 was a drier than average year at both of those stations both in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, and the number of official rain days.

Total for the month down here was 69.1mm.  Quite wet, and certainly stayed damp, as very little dried out even when it wasn't raining.
