rain and not the freezing variety.  Disappointing but unsurprising.

During what has been a far more interesting evening, the rain got heavier as the evening went on and at the same time, it also turned to sleet and wet snow for a while which has left a very slushy deposit on the roads and pavements.

Now, that is all in the process of clearing away to the north, but not before this has all resulted in a total of 3.2 mm of rain being recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8pm this evening, along with 1.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This means that today will now go down as an official rain day at both of those stations.

However, the dew points have now risen above freezing, and the temperatures have generally been refusing to drop as a result of there being too much cloud and far too much wind (the wind at 8pm this evening was still gusting up to 35.4mph from the east at Edinburgh Gogarbank).

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8pm this evening was 1.9°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 2°C at Edinburgh Airport and 1.7°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Temperature risen to 0.2c now.
Cloudy and misty with ice covered surfaces and trees.

The trees are makeing some strange noises as the wind shears the ice

Here there has been a mix of rain, sleet, refrozen rain and wet snow leaving a cover of slushy ice in places amongst the puddles. Up in Highland Perthshire there has been some serious snow with multiple accidents, abandoned vehicles etc but I suspect that it won’t make any news.

Hi John! It's properly pissing it down with 6 mm so far (feels like it should be much more than that!). Funnily enough, the temps is still holding at 2.7 c with 2 c dp. If it is just a degree colder, it would be turning out as an epic snow event by now.

Still, it will put off the usual weekly night club revellers, I can't imagine anyone being that bored/desperate enough to want to go out tonight.

Still only 1.5 C but dewpoint above freezing now. Today we had early snow grains, rain then a bit of wet snow. It's all over....another big let down here

You’re lucky Jerry it has been and is still vile here. 4-5°C much of the day with very strong cool winds and, over the last few hours, driving rain. No chance of anything wintry.

Although the main area of rain has moved away to the north, I have noticed by switching on various options in the TWO rain radar map, that the actual centre of Storm Deirdre appears to be passing just to the south of here across the Scottish Borders.

Since that actual centre of low pressure has just missed us though, it remains very windy here. In addition to that, the rain radar maps show that more precipitation is heading in this direction from the west thanks to the wrap-around occlusion which makes up part of this system. The bad news though is that when I then looked at that on my snow radar map, I discovered that what was now heading in this direction is just more rain.

Also noticing the temperature climb where it is now 8.4 C, but mercifully the rain and strong southerly wind has eased off.
