To be honest I'm not sure. I thought there was a difference between a true freezing rain event with supercooled droplets freezing instantly on contact with something and 'normal' rain coming into contact with a  sub zero surface and turning to ice. How do you tell the difference anyway?

Surfaces off the ground have a proper glaze on them including the roof .

The pavements and roads have patchy icy on them but are mostly damp probably as the ground temp is just above freezing. Grass is icy with frost and ice.

Actual freezing rain - as in supercooled water freezing instantly on contact with any surface - is exceptionally rare in the UK. It happened during the Beast earlier this year and I still have the photos of a glaze-covered house to prove it. The last time it happened before then was in the 80s IMBY.

For whatever reason, the media and the population at large seem to refer to normal rain landing on a frozen surface, causing ice, as freezing rain. It's not. If there is proper freezing rain being reported then yes, that's interesting indeed!

Light precipitation has now finally started here in Edinburgh, although this is still very sporadic and patchy just now. Sadly, this just looks like plain old rain to me though despite the fact that the dew points are still below freezing. As was the case the last time, this is probably due to the upper air temperatures being that bit milder and in any case, I would expect the dew points to rise above freezing anyway once this weather front have moved through.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

We had another 'flicker' in the leccy 5 mins or so ago? The NetW reports covered a huge are from sheffield up to north yorks so it has to be transmission issues.

Anyone else get the latest flicker?

Quite an interesting break down.

The precipitation arrived at 1pm and was preceded with an ice rain / light snow mix. The light snow part of it lasted all of 5 minutes.

The ice rain gradually became mixed with normal rain and by 2pm was entirely rain. Over the higher ground the ice rain mix was evident until 2.30pm.

Its now lashing down at +2.2c and the RH is 91%. DP 1c

The first band of precipitation must have arrived as the last dregs of sub zero air aloft was just departing. Just enough to provide a few flakes as I was out delivering cards.

When I got back hom every branch and twig was coated in ice, my front garden was quite a magical sight glistening under the street light outside my house.

I think this may have been one of those events when significant snowfall was forecast but we got freezing rain instead.

A lot of moans up here with sleet, ice pellets and heavy rain rather than snow. However just north of the Highland line in Highland Perthshire there has been heavy snow and multiple accidents on the roads. Ice is a problem on the ground further South and East.

Cold, heavy rain here at 1c.  Early this afternoon we had about one pellet per minute of graupel, then it turned to light rain and got progressively heavier.
