There is still a lot of cloud around, but also some clear spells as well with the Moon clearly visible and high in the sky as I write. Those clearer skies are finally starting to allow the temperature to drop a bit, although this hasn't yet happened to a great deal.

In the end, a total of 0.4 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 0.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at midnight was 2.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 3°C at Edinburgh Airport and 3.6°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Dropped below freezing last night and I thought that finally I might wake up to conditions that didn't make me want to hibernate but the torture goes on and on.

No sign of any frost following a min of -1.1C. Just another revolting grey mild wet morning with the temperature up to 6.0C and a strong wind from the vile SE quarter.

No air frost here last night as there was too much cloud for that as usual and given the latest forecasts, it might be quite a long time before we see the next frost as normal service is expected to be resumed by tonight with milder temperatures.

Anyway, I have just woke up to see the Sun shining for a change, with only a small amount of cloud around.

A total of 0.2 mm of rain has been recorded during this morning so far at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at 9am this morning, but I'm not sure whether that has been brought about by an actual shower of rain, or just by condensation as I wasn't up when that was recorded.

Last night's overnight minimum temperature was 1.7°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 1°C at Edinburgh Airport and 1.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 9am this morning was 4.4°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 4°C at Edinburgh Airport and 4.7°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Some 14c to 15c increase in temperature within the past 8 hrs!

Heavy rain and wind now!

I do wonder if this could have been a snow event if this occurred later in December or Jan!?

Watch up further north this tropical air is coming your way!

There is now more in the way of cloud than what there was earlier on although there is still some blue sky around which will no doubt, disappear during this afternoon once that next weather system starts to move in. This has resulted in a total of just 18 minutes of sunshine being recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank which has rather surprised me a bit for two reasons. First of all, I would have expected that total to have been a bit higher than what it is since there did appear to be quite a lot of sunshine during the earlier part of this morning, and the timing of when today's total so far has been recorded has also surprised me since it has only been during the last hour that we have actually had any recorded sunshine, and this looks to me like the cloudiest part of the day so far.

Anyway, the wind has also picked up and was gusting up to 33.6mph from the ESE at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 12 noon was 6.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 6°C at Edinburgh Airport and 6.4°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

After a fairly fair morning, cloud has increased along with a strengthening southerly wind. As a result, the current 9.4 c & 82% h are feeling cool & fresh for it but with better air quality and visibility (it has been a bit "stale and manky" in the past few days). It is dry at the moment but rain isn't too far away going by the latest radars.

As this afternoon as gone on, the weather has continued to go downhill and it is now raining here in Edinburgh as I write.

In the end, a total of just 18 minutes of sunshine was recorded for today in the end at Edinburgh Gogarbank with nothing at all in that department since 12 noon, so this is yet another very disappointing total which now leaves still needing another 8.8 hours of sunshine or more in total in order for this month to go down as being sunnier than average.

If this was the middle of summer, we would probably be able to get that in a single day but even then, that would still have to be a fairly sunny day. At this time of year though, we really need a couple of sunny days in order to be able to get that.

With the next couple of days expected to be unsettled, we can't expect to get much sunshine over that period, so that only leaves Friday as our only remaining chance of getting any sort of decent sunshine total.

That in itself is unlikely to be enough to give us the required total which we need so that today's failure to get a decent total despite the bright start to the day is probably now, the final nail in the coffin for our chances of seeing this month go down as being sunnier than average.

Today's highest temperature so far (I am reporting it this way just case it gets milder later on with the temperatures then going above those values as a result) is 6.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 6°C at Edinburgh Airport and 6.5°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 4pm this afternoon was 5.7°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 6°C at Edinburgh Airport and 6.2°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
