I have a horrible feeling that once the mobile westerly dirge sets in, it will take a lot of stopping. Worry ing times ahead if you are snow lover.

To be perfectly honest, an Atlantic dominated spell of weather would be a marked improvement to the garbage of the past ten days or so. At least we will actually get some “weather” or even see the sun here. “Normal autumn” will do just fine, there’s lots of time for winter. This endless grey and daily semi-darkness is awful (essentially zero hours of sunshine since the 12th of November).

Not according to the recent Gav video , the models have flipped to a strong blocking signal

For instance, I seem to recall the weather being fairly mild and unsettled over the Xmas weekend last year and there were a few other occasion when the atlantic took control, but to my recollection none of them lasted for long. There were no periods of prolonged zonality such as those that characterised the 2013/14 and 2015/16 winters, as two recent examples.

ECM would have us in shorts and sandals at the end of its run.

I can’t see too much other than the usual variance around the mobile theme at the moment.

The latest updates would give snow to Greece and barmy conditions for us....

I really hope this doesn't turn out to be how the winter is. Dull, damp, mild and slightly breezy the worst of all weathers in my book.

A truly dire run on the 00z GFS this morning.... but the models are chopping and changing in FI so there's still hope.

GFS and Control really ramping up those 850s.

Postage stamps contain a few colder options but they are poor from a cold weather perspective.

It's wrist slitting times for the coldies on here. I fear the price we will pay for a decent Summer is going to be a wet, windy and mild Winter. The law of averages and all that.

Plus whilst it does show a weakening of the zonal winds at 10hpa into mid December - the models show mild southerlies or south westerlies most of the time. - hardly a cold signal anyway!!

I guess most would call that a back loaded winter, but I just think that the seasons are simply out of sync with the traditional norms.

Huge plume of WAA over the north atlantic/Iceland/towards Greenland by the end of the GFS 6z. Doesn't quite lead to anything by the end of the run but would surely help with northern blocking.

On reflection, in other words, I am saying that the very far reaches of one run of FI suggests that there is a chance of some cold weather a week or so after the end of that run.

Is that clutching at straws...?

Charts have seemingly reduced themselves to a yawn fest, with front after front introducing seasonal moderate rainfall events, with winds prodominantly from the south west. The occasional slack isobars introducing the risk of frost/fog at times.

Looks to settle down after that with HP trying to build in, as with this time of the year, long nights and what will be saturated ground we can expect foggy nights and cold days where the fog doesnt clear

I couldn't be writing a more stereo typical end of Autumn summary

Another Xmas chalked off the diminishing number I've got left. Soon 2009 & 2010 will be a dimming memory.
