Variable amounts of cloud with some showers which have been brought in from off the North Sea at times during the last few hours.

The result of this is that in the end, a total of 4.4 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 3.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

The temperatures have been dropping when the skies are that bit clearer and so, the temperature at midnight was 4.5°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 4°C at Edinburgh Airport and 4.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Cloud amounts are much smaller this morning than of late, and the sky is mostly clear just now. However, there has been a few showers during the early hours of this morning which means that 0.4 mm of rain has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning along with 0.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This means that today is now the eighth day in a row which has failed to stay completely dry at either of those stations.

Too much cloud during the night meant that the temperatures refused to drop by all that much and because of that, we now have yet another frost-free morning although the temperature have now taken a bit of a late dip under the clearer skies which we have just now.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8am this morning was 3.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 4°C at Edinburgh Airport and 3.2°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This morning started off on a fairly promising note under clear skies, but it soon became a lot cloudier and although there is some blue sky around just now in a few places, a total of just 18 minutes of sunshine has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon.

There has also been some further showers during this morning although a total of just 0.6 mm of rain has now been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon along with 0.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

There is also more of a wind which is most noticeable whenever a shower of rain comes along, and that is making it feel really bitter. It is also colder than yesterday anyway at the moment so that the temperature at 12 noon was 5.4°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 6°C at Edinburgh Airport and 5.9°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Those showers which are still coming in from off the North Sea have got a bit heavier and more frequent during this afternoon and yet, the rainfall totals at the nearby weather stations just don't seem to be reflecting that very fairly just now. I had ventured out for a while, only to get caught in what turned out to be quite a heavy downpour and yet, the official rainfall totals for today are still showing a total of no more than 1.0 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 4pm this afternoon along with 1.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

That is enough to mean that today will now go down as yet another an official rain day at both of those stations, but how those totals can be as low as they are after these showers were heavy enough for me to get virtually completely drenched after being caught in one is completely beyond me because to me, those totals should be showing a lot more than that given how frequent and heavy these showers have been. To make matters worse, these figures are showing nothing at all for the last couple of hours even though that is when we have actually been getting the heaviest rainfall so if anyone who is more knowledgeable on this subject than me can shed some light onto how this is even possible, I would be more than happy to hear all about that.

On another note, this afternoon brought us only a few patches of blue sky here and there and in the end, a total of just half an hour of sunshine was recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank. Believe it or not, that is actually better than what we have been getting recently, but this still comes nowhere near to being enough to bring us back on track for this month to end up being sunnier than average (a minimum total of 9.8 hours of sunshine are still needed over the last five days of this month for that to happen).

Not much over a week ago, the very concept of this month being duller than average in this part of the world would have been unthinkable and yet, that is exactly what is going to end up happening if we don't start getting more in the way of sunshine before the end of this month, than what we are getting just now. This means that on that note, the end of all of this easterly crap which we are getting just now, couldn't come quickly enough now.

Today's maximum temperature was 6.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 6°C at Edinburgh Airport and 6.4°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 4pm this afternoon was 5.3°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 5°C at Edinburgh Airport and 6.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

There has been some further showers during this evening which are continuing to be brought in from off the North Sea on an easterly wind. That appeared to look almost torrential just an hour or so ago and although the latest official rainfall totals for today so far as at 8pm this evening show a total of just 1.2 mm of rain being recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 1.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, these figures cannot possibly be even close to being correct since these stations are clearly not picking up on all of the rain which is actually falling in this area just now.

In addition to that, the fact that there is too much cloud around around with a little bit too much wind means that the temperatures are already refusing to drop. Meanwhile, the temperature at 8pm this evening was 4.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 5°C at Edinburgh Airport and 5.4°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
