As we move into the final month of the meteorological autumn, I can report that it is now raining here in Edinburgh.

In the end, a total of 1.2 mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during yesterday along with 1.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This means that in the end, yesterday will now go down as an official rain day at both of those stations although it has taken until the very last hour of the day (i.e. the hour between 11pm and midnight) for the required threshold for that to be met at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh despite the fact that this threshold had already been met at Edinburgh Gogarbank during yesterday morning.

Meanwhile, the temperature at midnight was 6.7°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 7°C at Edinburgh Airport and 7.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

The overnight rain has now cleared away and the Sun is now shining here in Edinburgh.

That overnight rain has resulted in a total of 6.8 mm of rain being recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning, along with 8.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This means that today will now go down as the first official rain day of this month at both of those stations.

After a fairly mild night to begin with, the temperature is still dropping and so, the temperature at 8am this morning was 3.3°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 2°C at Edinburgh Airport and 4.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

An almost completely sunny morning means that a total of 3.3 hours of sunshine has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon and for anyone who is looking for this month to be sunnier than average overall, you can't really get a better start to the month than that.

Last night's overnight minimum temperature eventually bottomed out to 3.3°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 2°C at Edinburgh Airport and 3.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 12 noon was 7.2°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 8°C at Edinburgh Airport and 8.7°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This afternoon brought a bit more in the way of cloud but in the end, a total of 6.1 hours of sunshine was recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank which has now set the standard for this month. We have now entered the darkest period of the year with the days still continuing to shorten. Because of that, I would say that today has a good chance of being up there as one of the sunniest days of this month in the end, if it doesn't end up actually being the sunniest day of this month.

Today's maximum temperature was 8.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 8°C at Edinburgh Airport and 9.4°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, which means that today was slightly colder than yesterday.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 5pm this afternoon was 5.2°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 7°C at Edinburgh Airport and 6.9°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, which means that today was slightly colder than yesterday.
