Happy Hallowe'en, everyone.

Too much cloud around just now means that the temperature is refusing to drop at the moment.

In the end, a total of 1.6 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank, along with 1.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at midnight was 3.5°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 3°C at Edinburgh Airport and 3.7°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

No frost here, too much cloud cover I would imagine.

But it's 3c with a light southerly wind and no sign of any rain. I'll take that

In contrast to other recent mornings, this morning has started off on a rather damp, dull, dreary and depressing note and it is raining here in Edinburgh as I write. That is important because in order for this month to go down as being sunnier than average overall at Edinburgh Gogarbank, a total of at least an hour of sunshine needs to be recorded there for today in the end. If that total comes out as 54 minutes, the total sunshine amount will be exactly equal to the 1981-2010 average for that station and anything less than that will means that this month will actually go down as being slightly duller than average overall at that station.

On that note, the omens are not looking all that great just now with more rain being forecast as well. I still don't think that today will be completely sunless, and the latest forecasts suggest that there is likely to be a brief respite from the rather damp weather during the early part of this afternoon. That would therefore give us our best chance of getting some recorded sunshine although whether or not this will be enough for this month to go down as being sunnier than average at Edinburgh Gogarbank is another matter.

This means that even though we are talking about rather diabolical sunshine totals even for this time of year, it is still not certain that this month will end up being sunnier than average at Edinburgh Gogarbank. Given that last month (September) was slightly duller than average at Edinburgh Gogarbank, this is now turning out to be a rather remarkable autumn in the sense that we are really struggling to get a sunnier than average month at that particular station whereas there has been no such issues at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Anyway, this morning's rainfall has resulted in a total of 0.6 mm of rain being recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning along with 0.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Last night's overnight minimum temperature was 2.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 1°C at Edinburgh Airport and 1.5°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, so no official frost at any of my three local stations this time.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8am this morning was 5.7°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 3°C at Edinburgh Airport and 3.7°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

An unexpected shower this morning just dampened the ground, but was too light to register.  A little broken mid-level cloud but mostly sunny; calm.

4.9*C after a minimum of -0.4*C at 3.45am, but any frost was dispelled by the shower.

The lowest I managed here at Folkestone harbour was 2.0 c at 4.30 am before the southerly wind caused temps to rise, along with an isolated shower (0.2 mm). Now 11.3 c & 80% h under this said brisk southerly wind, there is some sunshine but high cloud is slowly filling in the sky.

Fair and dry. Not as cold and clammy as of late at 11.3 c & 77% but a moderate southerly breeze is keeping the freshness going.

This morning has for once, actually been quite remarkable in terms of our weather which has been a big change from the normal borefest which I usually report here.

We went into today needing an hour or more of sunshine in order for this month to go down as being sunnier than average at Edinburgh Gogarbank. You can get that of course within a single hour, but only if that is a completely sunny hour although these are actually fairly common during a sunny day. On a dull day though, we are often struggling to get as much as an hour of sunshine in total throughout that entire day and although this is more likely to happen during the winter months when it's darker, this is something which I have often seen happening during the summer as well.

Given that today started off on such a dull note, the omens were therefore, not looking good to begin with. Even before the rain eventually cleared away though, the Sun was already starting to break through and things were already starting to look a lot better in that regard as a result. By 11am though, a total of just 6 minutes of sunshine had been recorded so far and at that point in time, it was now looking as though everything would be down to what happened during this afternoon.

However, the Sun has carried on shining since then and out of the blue from nowhere, the following hour ended up being a completely sunny hour which on its own would have been enough to give us what we needed. The end result of this is that a total of 1.1 hours of sunshine has now been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon and as a result of that, I can now rather earlier than expected, confirm that this month will now go down as being a sunnier than average month at Edinburgh Gogarbank regardless of what happens during this afternoon.

At the same time though, we can't discount this morning's rainfall and so today's rainfall total so far as at 12 noon was 1.2 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank (where today will now go down as another official rain day as a result) and 0.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

I still don't have all of the data for 12 noon even that this should all have come through by now. From the data which I have though, I can say that the temperature at 12 noon was 9.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 10°C at Edinburgh Airport, so it's a little bit milder now than what it was forecast to be, and this is also the first time for just over a week that the temperature has reached double figures at any of my three local stations.

The overdue first sub-zero reading was finally achieved overnight with -1.1C but rather than leading to the fine day that was forecast, it is horrific once again with grey skies and more miserable light rain

There more in the way of cloud just now, but this afternoon has been mostly sunny with a total of 4.2 hours of sunshine being recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 4pm this afternoon.

Since certain data which I need for these posts still hasn't been coming through since 12 noon, I am very limited in terms of what I can post here, so I can only say that the temperature at 4pm this afternoon was around 9°C, which follows on from a maximum of 10°C.

11C now, but how surprising this morning: -1.7C in the early hours makes this the coldest October night locally for at least 18 years.

At 6.50am at 1C there was a light rain shower- but no blobs of white!

Yesterday was bitterly cold especially facing S/SE in the morning.

Rather cloudy here in Edinburgh and as a result of there being too much cloud around, the temperatures are refusing to drop at the moment.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8pm this evening was 8.5°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 8°C at Edinburgh Airport and 8.5°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
