This morning has for once, actually been quite remarkable in terms of our weather which has been a big change from the normal borefest which I usually report here.
We went into today needing an hour or more of sunshine in order for this month to go down as being sunnier than average at Edinburgh Gogarbank. You can get that of course within a single hour, but only if that is a completely sunny hour although these are actually fairly common during a sunny day. On a dull day though, we are often struggling to get as much as an hour of sunshine in total throughout that entire day and although this is more likely to happen during the winter months when it's darker, this is something which I have often seen happening during the summer as well.
Given that today started off on such a dull note, the omens were therefore, not looking good to begin with. Even before the rain eventually cleared away though, the Sun was already starting to break through and things were already starting to look a lot better in that regard as a result. By 11am though, a total of just 6 minutes of sunshine had been recorded so far and at that point in time, it was now looking as though everything would be down to what happened during this afternoon.
However, the Sun has carried on shining since then and out of the blue from nowhere, the following hour ended up being a completely sunny hour which on its own would have been enough to give us what we needed. The end result of this is that a total of 1.1 hours of sunshine has now been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon and as a result of that, I can now rather earlier than expected, confirm that this month will now go down as being a sunnier than average month at Edinburgh Gogarbank regardless of what happens during this afternoon.
At the same time though, we can't discount this morning's rainfall and so today's rainfall total so far as at 12 noon was 1.2 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank (where today will now go down as another official rain day as a result) and 0.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
I still don't have all of the data for 12 noon even that this should all have come through by now. From the data which I have though, I can say that the temperature at 12 noon was 9.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 10°C at Edinburgh Airport, so it's a little bit milder now than what it was forecast to be, and this is also the first time for just over a week that the temperature has reached double figures at any of my three local stations.
The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.
