As Michael in Aberdeen suggests a new thread for ‘the far east’ and ‘down under’ might be interesting because the hurricane thread is of course just for what its title means.

Having said that, the latest 2018 typhoon threat for the Philippines archipelago and region as a whole is as severe as it ever was.

Having connections with the region I suppose I have an interest in what happens and it is easy to see how politics and weather coexist even if locals don’t perhaps see it that way.

http://nottspolitics.org/2016/04/18/the-philippines-environmental-politics-and-the-challenges-ahead/

That said people in the Philippines just aren’t interested in the weather like we are in the UK.

I was probably one of a handful of people who had max min thermometer in the province I worked in. When I first saw heavy intense tropical rain it was like nothing I had even seen before yet the locals shrugged it off. Amazing light storms over the mountains the same. Incredible cloudscapes similar. I did discover though a couple of weather geeks who worked at PAGASA (the national weather service) with all the latest sat images etc but they were the exception than the rule.

But back to the the current storm and future events

Over to anyone or not as the case may be.

I might compare SSTs in the two places, just out of curiosity.

Add: the BBC front page devotes less sace to Mangkhut. Interesting.

Still at Cat 4 Typhoon status....looks as if it's heading on a more slight southerly trajectory....Sparing at least H.Kong from its full force

The draw of air is quite incredible on this typhoon:

Florence is literally minuscule in comparison of size.

That's a proper storm if ever there was one.

Terrifying if you are able to experience something like that.

Japan's Kansai (Osaka) airport, one of Japan's busiest, has only just resumed operations after storm surge flooding from Typhoon Jebi on Sept 4th.

Watch for Trami as cat 3 landfall in Japan this weekend, with the track taking it across or close to the most populated areas next week
