During this afternoon, there was a bit more in the way of sunshine at times but so far, just 1.4 hours of sunshine has been recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 5pm this afternoon, as our duller than average start to the final month of the meteorological summer goes on.

There was also a very heavy shower of rain later on this afternoon which produced a really torrential downpour which I was caught in whilst I was out and about. This in turn has increased today's rainfall totals to 1.0 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 4.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which means today will now go down as yet another official rain day at both of those stations as this wet start to August goes on.

That downpour was triggered off by that wee bit of sunshine which we had this afternoon, along with the very muggy conditions which means that today's maximum temperature was 24.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 23°C at Edinburgh Airport and 23.6°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 5pm this afternoon was 20.4°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 21°C at Edinburgh Airport and 20.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Still 30C at 6:30pm here!! Usually that would merit some attention, but given the oven-ness of summer 2018, no one really notices!! This is turning into an historic summer (certainly for East Anglia)

Indeed, it's raining again.

Pig sick of this. The first half of summer had only seven rain days and the way things are going this will be the number of dry days the second half has.

The band of rain just to my north and west has just about stayed away from here as we have just clung onto some drier weather by the skin of our teeth. As I write, that band of rain is now starting to close in on here, but weakening in the process. What we have had though, is yet another permacast hell and yet another boring and depressing grey nothingness which has resulted in yet another dismal total of just 1.5 hours of sunshine being recorded in the end at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 9pm tonight was 19.8°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 20°C at Edinburgh Airport and 19.9°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. Therefore, is another warm and muggy night where we could really do with that weather front to the north and west of here, moving though so that we can then get into the cooler and fresher air behind it would in turn would make it easier for sleeping. At the moment though, that isn't happening quickly enough.
