In the end, a total of 6.6 mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during yesterday, along with 6.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

So far as at 6am, this morning has been completely dry at Edinburgh Gogarbank although a further 0.2 mm of rain has fallen at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh from a shower of rain which passed through during the early hours of this morning.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes this month's total so far to 40.0 mm, the total for this summer so far to 95.6 mm and the total for this year so far to 363.0 mm as at 6am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes this month's total so far to 31.2 mm, the total for this summer so far to 82.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 354.0 mm as at 6am this morning.

Yesterday's totals weren't particularly massive and the last couple of days of this month brings only a risk of a few showers with that shower risk for today actually being downgraded in subsequent BBC Scotland forecasts between last night and this morning.

Furthermore, most of any showers which are around over the next couple of days, are expected to be further west and so, we may well have had our last official rain day for this month because of that.

That in turn, is probably the final nail in the coffin for this month going down as anything other than a substantially drier than average month, although this month hasn't actually turned out to be as dry as it had looked as though it would be for quite a long time.

Yesterday brought the wettest day since early April here, with 21.3mm falling. That's completely ruled out an exceptionally dry July here. The total now is 45.0mm to the end of the 29th.

8mm here yesterday and 11mm for July.

It was the first wet and windy day since April and I had really missed them NOT.

Hopefully after tomorrow zero to very little rain to come until autumn.

An unforecast evening of persistent rain has seen the rain total edge closer to average with 48.4mm and no end in sight.

Given the first half of the month was completely dry this shows how bad the second half has been. Not like 2013 when there was 7.4mm up to the 22nd and the month finished above average at 65.6mm. That was largely down to two exceptionally wet days with over 20mm. This year has seen persistently unsettled conditions especially over the diabolical past four days.

In the end, a total of 2.4 mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during yesterday, along with 1.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

So far as at 7am, this morning has been completely dry at both of those stations.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes this month's total so far to 42.4 mm, the total for this summer so far to 98.0 mm and the total for this year so far to 365.4 mm as at 7am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes this month's total so far to 32.6 mm, the total for this summer so far to 84.2 mm and the total for this year so far to 355.4 mm as at 7am this morning.

This month started on a very dry note with the first 12 days of it being completely dry. At that time, we were in an official absolute drought and we couldn't get a single bit of rain to save ourselves with everything looking rather brown and parched.

Now as a measure of how different the situation has become, we can't now buy a single completely dry day to save ourselves, although everything is now looking a lot greener as a result.

With the way that this month is finishing up, I would not be surprised if the above totals for this month were not the actual final totals even though today is the last day of the month.

Now that we have just entered another new month, I can now confirm that my final total for July comes out as 42.4 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 32.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this is 66.1% of the 1981-2010 average for that station whilst the botanic gardens in Edinburgh had 50.2% of its 1981-2010 average rainfall during July.

Overall, this shows that July was a significantly drier than month at both of those stations in terms of the actual rainfall amounts. The month was very dry to start off with and at this point in time, we were in an official absolute drought with everything looking really parched. However, we then had quite a wet end to the month which meant that it wasn't as dry in the end, as it has looked as though it would be.

To that end, Edinburgh Gogarbank had 6 official rain days during July and this also shows that it was a dry month since that amounts to just 58.8% of the 1981-2010 average. It is a similar story at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which had just 8 official rain days with that amounting to just 84.2% of the 1981-2010 average.

Over the summer so far, Edinburgh Gogarbank has had a total of 98.0 mm of rain which is 50.7% of the 1981-2010 average whilst the botanic gardens in Edinburgh has had 84.2 mm of rain which is 45.1% of the 1981-2010 average.

In addition to that, Edinburgh Gogarbank has had 14 official rain days during this summer so far which is 44.0% of the 1981-2010 average whereas the botanic gardens in Edinburgh has had 15 official rain days during this summer so far which is 52.1% of the 1981-2010 average.

Over the year so far, Edinburgh Gogarbank has had 365.4 mm of rain which is 48.4% of the 1981-2010 averages whilst the botanic gardens in Edinburgh has had a total of 355.4 mm of rain during this year so far which is 50.5% of the 1981-2010 average.

In addition to that, Edinburgh Gogarbank has had 63 official rain days during this year so far which is 45.9% of the 1981-2010 average whereas the botanic gardens in Edinburgh has had 68 official rain days during this year so far which is 54.8% of the 1981-2010 average.

FInal total here is 46.1mm, or 72% of the 1981-2010 average. So a dry month, but not exceptionally dry like it was looking before the final few days.
