A total of 13.2 mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during yesterday, along with 8.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which makes yesterday, the second wettest day of this month so far at both of those stations.
So far as at 6am, this morning has been completely dry although with more rain being forecast for later on, it isn't likely to end up that way.
For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes this month's total so far to 33.4 mm, the total for this summer so far to 89.0 mm and the total for this year so far to 356.4 mm as at 6am this morning.
For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes this month's total so far to 24.2 mm, the total for this summer so far to 75.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 347.0 mm as at 6am this morning.
Even after all of that, this month is still running quite a lot drier than average. After today, there will only be two days left of this month and yet, we have still only had about half of our average July rainfall.
The fact that the torrential downpours of the last few days didn't even produce totals which were as high as what I would have expected, has probably now acted as the final nail in the coffin for our chances of this month being anything else other than substantially drier than average in the end, even with more rain being forecast for today.
Nevertheless, we did start off this month in an official absolute drought and for a long time, it had looked as though this month would end up being our driest July on record until the chances of that happening were scuppered by what has happened over the last week or so.
