2.4mm from today's cold front .. 2.4mm more than expected! Total now at 14mm. All eyes on Thursday/Friday's progged 'cold' frontal trough - could be an all-or-nothing event for this area - depending on the timing of the trough and positioning of the very hot plume ...

A total of 1.8 mm of rain fell during yesterday at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, thanks to a thunderstorm which moved up from the south during last night.

In addition to that, a total of 0.2 mm of rain has been recorded for today so far at the botanic gardens as at 7am this morning, although this is most likely to be due to condensation with the air being so humid, as it is actually sunny just now as I write.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, this takes the total for this month so far to 15.4 mm, the total for this summer so far to 67.0 mm and the total for this year so far to 338.2 mm as at 7am this morning.

Last night's thunderstorm completely missed Edinburgh Gogarbank though so for there, there has been no additional rainfall since my last report on this thread. This means that the totals for Edinburgh Gogarbank remain unchanged since my last report on this thread.

The outlook for the next few days going into the start of next week is now looking a lot more unsettled which means that we should be seeing some further additions to the totals at both of those above stations before this month is out. However, the overall deficit is now so great that this is unlikely to be enough for this month to end up being considerably drier than average in the end.

A total of 1.4 mm of rain fell during last night up until midnight at Edinburgh Gogarbank, along with 0.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that, a total of 8.0 mm of rain has fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 7am this morning, along 2.6 mm at the botanic gardens.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this takes the total for this month so far to 28.2 mm, the total for this summer so far to 83.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 351.2 mm as at 7am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, this takes the total for this month so far to 18.4 mm, the total for this summer so far to 70.0 mm and the total for this year so far to 341.2 mm as at 7am this morning.

With more rain being forecast for today, the above totals for today are not likely to be today's final totals in the end. Nevertheless, it continues to be quite a lot drier than average overall with time quickly running out for this month which only has another three days of it to go after today.

We are forecast to be moving into a much cooler, Atlantic air mass and once happens, our chances of getting the sort of massive torrential downpour which could potentially bring this month's totals close to the 1981-2010 July averages will probably quickly diminish. Because of that, it is now looking virtually certain that this month will now go down as a substantially drier than average month here in Edinburgh.

Not sure how the Met office record their records, but Marham came out on top for rainfall yesterday with 25.8mm.

I recorded 37mm at the same time which is the first rain for 47 days. They need more stations to be able to record data effectively.

As always with showers some places have a lot of rain and others very little.

Here in the south the lowest rainfall total for July I can see at the moment is St Catherine's Point on the southern tip of the Isle of Wight with just 1.6mm.

Further inland High Wycombe has just 2.4mm and Heathrow 3.6mm

By contrast Middle Wallop has 34.4mm

My total is now at 7.0mm

32.0mm here so far. Not sure we will exceed the average of 55mm now as the rain today seems more light/drizzle than the torrential thundery stuff that was forecast.

We should exceed 40mm though which is my benchmark for a properly dry month.

Looking at the stats just shows how awful July and August have been because they are the only two months not to record below 40mm since 2007. Here is the last occasion each month reported below 40mm with the number of times this has occurred since 2007 in brackets.

Jan – 2018 (2)
Feb – 2016 (4)
March – 2016 (5)
April – 2018 (7)
May – 2018 (7)
June – 2018 (3)
July – 2006
August – 2005
Sept – 2016 (3)
Oct – 2007 (1)
Nov – 2012 (2)
Dec -2016 (2)

October is the next most overdue but that's always been a very wet month with a significantly higher average rainfall than most others. Feels like we get three Octobers in a year now and sometimes more.

12mm from thunderstorms on Thursday, and then a further 15mm from Friday's storms brings our July total to 32mm.  Still well below our average of 53mm.

Another 0.6mm today in the showers, giving a total of 5.4mm

A total of 13.2 mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during yesterday, along with 8.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which makes yesterday, the second wettest day of this month so far at both of those stations.

So far as at 6am, this morning has been completely dry although with more rain being forecast for later on, it isn't likely to end up that way.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes this month's total so far to 33.4 mm, the total for this summer so far to 89.0 mm and the total for this year so far to 356.4 mm as at 6am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes this month's total so far to 24.2 mm, the total for this summer so far to 75.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 347.0 mm as at 6am this morning.

Even after all of that, this month is still running quite a lot drier than average. After today, there will only be two days left of this month and yet, we have still only had about half of our average July rainfall.

The fact that the torrential downpours of the last few days didn't even produce totals which were as high as what I would have expected, has probably now acted as the final nail in the coffin for our chances of this month being anything else other than substantially drier than average in the end, even with more rain being forecast for today.

Nevertheless, we did start off this month in an official absolute drought and for a long time, it had looked as though this month would end up being our driest July on record until the chances of that happening were scuppered by what has happened over the last week or so.
