Yes John, I'm not experienced in the physics of thunderstorms but there is an upper trough heading towards us and with cloud top cooling storms can fire overnight so watch for lightning to the east after dark.....the ingredients are in place

What is amazing though is the fact that although the sky looks very dark, the Sun is still continuing to shine with virtually no effect from that cloud cover on today's sunshine totals which have continued to pile up as a result.

I noticed a distant anvil way. way to the west of me whilst driving back from my sister earlier. Looked rather picturesque with the setting sun illuminating it a dark red colour

Nothing here though and typically I'm off to Cornwall tomorrow so on the day I might at least get a decent storm as compensation for the crappy heat I'll be elsewhere

This approaching storm has come all the way from North Yorkshire. It's a big storm over Midlothian. Hope it reaches us!

A few lightning strikes are now starting to show up just to the SW of Edinburgh on the latest radar maps.

Meanwhile, the same radar maps show that a massive torrential downpour has moved through Hawick in the Scottish Borders (it's a pity that I'm no longer there to be able to witness that). This appears to be part of the same cluster of thunderstorms which was affecting the north of England not long ago, and all of that appears to moving from the SSE in this direction just now.

Let's hope that all of this doesn't just fizzle out as it reaches us, which has been happening all too often during this summer.

Here we go again!  A couple of lightning strikes and rumbles.  Will it materialise this time?

The rain is now just to the SE of Edinburgh with some very intense echoes showing up on the radar map.

As I said earlier, signs that we might be off again with the second wave of showers forming over the Midlands as the trough solidifies. Could be a good night to come for some...

Jerry, I have just looked out of my south-facing kitchen window and noticed a few flashes of lightning in the distance over the Pentland Hills.

I haven't heard any thunder yet, but the lightning appears to be getting much closer now with some frequent very bright lightning strikes going on around here.

Furthermore, those echoes on the radar map just to the south of here which shows where all of the rain is, appear to be getting even more intense over time.

As the thunder and lightning carries on in this neck of the woods, it has now started chucking it down with rain as well. That rain is very torrential in nature and it is going to be interesting to see what this does to our overall rainfall totals.

Storm over...still flashing now and then to NW. What a day! 28 C, Wildfires, Flying ant swarm and an evening storm which I watched from the garden with a single malt!

Still the occasional flash seen from cells to the NE and ESE. Neither very active but a nice surprise given better destabilisation is supposed to occur later tonight.

Thunder, lightning and heavy rain here. 1mm has fallen in less than 10 minutes.

I've had to close my bedroom window which is not good when the temperature inside is 24.1C.

Well that was remarkable.  From virtually nothing to a full blown thunderstorm in seconds with ferocious rain and intense lightning!, and then after just a couple of minutes the deluge just suddenly stopped.  Still some spectacular flashes on the back edge of this storm though - really was quite vicious for a short while.

EDIT - found 5mm extra rain in the gauge after this storm - most of that probably fell in those 2 to 3 minutes.  On top of 7mm from the earlier storms.
