A level 2 heatwave alert is in place from Yorkshire down to the SE

Current watch level: Level 2 - Alert and Readiness

Issued at: 09:04 on Fri 13 Jul 2018

There is a 80 % probability of heatwave conditions between 0900 on Sunday and 0900 on Tuesday in parts of England.

Temperatures are expected to increase again over the weekend as dry and settled weather conditions return, peaking on Sunday and Monday daytimes, with warm and stuffy nights following these hot days. The main focus of the highest temperatures is expected to be across southeast England. Although temperatures are also expected to rise in northern and western England, these areas are not expected to become as hot, and are more likely to remain below trigger criteria. Please note that the probability of reaching trigger criteria has now increased slightly since yesterday's alert for Yorkshire and the Humber, East Midlands, East of England and Southeast England, though all these areas currently remain on Level 2 alert. Conversely the probability of reaching trigger criteria in Southwest England has reduced slightly, and this area is now no longer on Level 2 alert. Into Tuesday, temperatures are expected to show a decreasing trend away from East Anglia, with all areas likely to be below trigger criteria, though still remaining rather warm.

An update will be issued when the alert level changes in any region. Alerts are issued once a day by 0900 if required and are not subject to amendment in between standard issue times. Note that the details of the forecast weather are valid at the time of issue but may change over the period that an alert remains in force. These details will not be updated here unless the alert level also changes, the latest forecast details can be obtained at the following link: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/forecast/#?tab=map

Arrived in the Lakes to find the heatwave over. Gloomy misty drizzly and 17 C. Like being in Edinburgh. Don't think I'm going to experience high temperatures this year. I'm always in the wrong part of the UK 😲

I can report that as at 3pm this afternoon, the temperature at Edinburgh Airport has reached 25ºC which for that station, actually makes today the joint warmest day of the year so far.

Meanwhile, at other stations in Edinburgh, the highest temperature so far as at 3pm this afternoon was 23.5ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 24.2ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which for both of those stations, is just a fraction of a degree cooler than the highest temperature of this month so far at that particular station.

With all of that going on, I can sense that Jerry is probably realising that he has gone to the Lakes at the wrong time just now as the weather is concerned as there are no easterlies for him to escape from just now which in turn, is allowing us to get this really good weather which he would have been able to enjoy if he was here just now.

Too true John, I'm always in the wrong place! 23 C and bright here in the Lakes which is warm enough for walking in the hills 👍

That already was the case here during late June - the low humidity combined with an often gusty easterly breeze meant that temperatures took a tumble in the evening meaning it was already below 20C before 9pm on many evenings, and a light jacket was often required unless you were in direct sunlight.

The good thing about August here is that easterlies become much less common and that is not often an issue.

As for 19C in the evening that's not far off the average day time max, so hardly cold, and with the near permanent sunshine it's actually been warm in the sun.

I've lost count of the amount of days this summer when I've had a light evening meal outside, or gone on a short walk around the block in the pleasant temperatures

It’s the warm evenings sat out on our veranda in shorts and vest that I love and we’ve had plenty of those this year.  It’s still 26.2c and after 8 o clock!  Yes it’s cooling down but slowly!  The downside is, I could do with a daily afternoon siesta.

I went for a long walk in the forests just NW of Ringwood (by Moors Valley) in the middle part of today, where the sandy paths and mix of pines and bracken made for a very Mediterranean feel. There was even a rare lizard sighting to add to the sensation!

I expect it got close to 30*C out there, aided by the sandy ground. Back home it peaked in the low 28s which is still very good going.

Signs in the modelling that next weekend may bring higher temperatures. Having had so many very warm or hot ones already, it's quite something to be writing that!

29.9c on weather station today. Just couldn't break 30c. This is with the aspirated fan on in the shade. Norwich Airport got to 29c so happy with my figure.

Level 2 heatwave alert issued for all regions in England except the north west and north east

Current watch level: Level 2 - Alert and Readiness

Issued at: 09:11 on Wed 18 Jul 2018

There is a 60 % probability of heatwave conditions between 0000 on Friday and 0000 on Sunday in parts of England.

It will become increasingly humid through the end of this week with very warm nights across much of England. South Yorkshire, the Southeast, London, East Midlands and parts of West Midlands, eastern parts of the Southwest, and East Anglia, are likely to see good periods of sunshine, contributing to hot daytime temperatures. As a result thresholds are likely to be just met in these areas. There is a very low risk of thunderstorms developing in the south and east. Northern areas are likely to be somewhat cloudier, with sunny intervals and occasional showers possible Friday and Saturday, and although it will still be very warm in sunnier intervals in these areas, thresholds are unlikely to be met. This alert may be extended into Sunday and Monday, with the areas included being kept under review.

An update will be issued when the alert level changes in any region. Alerts are issued once a day by 0900 if required and are not subject to amendment in between standard issue times. Note that the details of the forecast weather are valid at the time of issue but may change over the period that an alert remains in force. I just hope the coming heatwave isn't just a SE affair. Starting to lose a bit of faith as this week has been much more what we are used to round here. More showers popping up than forecast with temperatures pegged down. I've become so used to the recent weather that I've come to work without a coat on today and now it is piddling it down. Rain on 5 out of the last 7 days in a row with more to come. I blame United Utilities entirely!

Hoping to get back to some sun and heat next week to see out the rest of summer!

It's mostly an England and Wales thing. Up here we are averaging 20-23 C as a max. By 8 pm it's 17 C so a bit chilly for sitting out.

Move your elderly folk up here the buildings and nights are cool. Sleep isn't a problem.

My 83 year old Mum has just enjoyed a comfortable week up here after so many weeks of heat in Yorkshire where quite frankly she's struggling.
