For once, I actually have a night where I've not been asleep at this time, as I wasn't going to allow that to happen on this occasion.

Anyway, it is dry here in Edinburgh once again, but it is also overcast once again which will no doubt lead to tomorrow starting off with another permacast hell to start the day with.

Meanwhile, the temperature at midnight was 14.9ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 14ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 14.8ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This morning has started off an another disappointing note with yet more constant grey skies here in the Scottish Capital. The cloud isn't as thick or extensive as it was at this time yesterday, but the result of that is still the same with nothing in the way of sunshine having been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning.

However, I'm not too concerned about that just now because this month so far has set a pattern where despite the dull starts to each morning which we have had a lot of the time, we never end up with less than about 7 hours of sunshine being recorded by the end of any given day (this after all, is turning out to the summer where the weather refuses to go downhill). Nevertheless, a nice and sunny morning gets me nice and motivated for the rest of the day, and it can get quite depressing after a while when you don't get them.

Last night's overnight minimum temperature was 13.5ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 14ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 13.8ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh so that it's been another fairly warm night.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8am this morning was 14.7ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 15ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 14.9ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Actually not a bad day here now that the sun is out. Bit of a breeze and 19c, but by no means a write-off. No sign of any rain though, but hoping for some showers toward the end of the week.

For now, the July permacast goes on here in Edinburgh with nothing in the way of sunshine having been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon. However, this doesn't look to me like a day which deserves to end up being completely sunless. There was a few patches of blue sky around this morning, and there is a bit more blue sky to my east just now as I write. However, this blue sky has never been in the right place until now, for us to actually be able to see any sunshine.

Given how this month has gone so far, I still wouldn't rule out the possibility of the Sun breaking through eventually. However, the lowest final daily sunshine total of this month so far is 6.8 hours. This means that more than 6.8 hours of sunshine needs to have been recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank in the end, in order for today to not end up being the dullest day of this month so far.

There has been a few times earlier on when the Sun has been trying in vain to be seen and when that has happening, I will be cheering it on, in the hope that it might break through and thus, continue that impressive record for this month but that hasn't happened yet as I write. If today is going to end up not being the dullest day of the month, then the Sun will need to be breaking through over the next few hours.

If we get to 3pm (for example) without there being any recorded sunshine, then today will go down as the dullest day of the month so far regardless of what happens during the rest of the day afterwards as there would then, no longer be enough available daylight left for that total of 6.8 hours to be made up. For now, I'm not seeing any signs of that changing yet although that doesn't mean that it won't then do so very quickly once I submit this post.

I don't have all of the latest temperature data for technical reasons but from what I have, the temperature at 12 noon was around the 17ºC mark which is rather disappointing when you consider how warm it has been recently.

EDIT:

As I write, there is still no recorded sunshine for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank but right on cue, the Sun has come out and the cloud is breaking up a lot of more as today yet again shows its hand as being yet another day in the life of a summer where the weather just refuses to go downhill in any way.

Rather disappointingly, that wee bit of sunshine which has appeared recently has resulted in just 18 minutes of sunshine being recorded for the entire day so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 3pm this afternoon. At this time of year, it is possible for sunshine to be recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank right up until 10pm but given the actual time of sunshine, the maximum amount of sunshine which we could get between now and then is probably around 6.5 hours, realistically speaking which would then give us a possible maximum of 6.8 hours of sunshine being recorded for today in the end.

Even that would equal the lowest total for this month so far and this means that whatever happens for the rest of today, today is going to at the very best, the joint dullest day of this month so far. In order for us to even get that total though, it has to be completely sunny between now and sunset. The Sun was shining what I started this post, but the cloud has if anything, thickened up a bit again and so, the current at least is not likely to be a completely sunny one. As a result of that, I can now safely say that today will go down as the dullest day of this month so far.

The weird this is though, that this will be the case even if we get a completely sunny evening and that in itself, just shows the sheer scale of how remarkable a month this has been so far in terms of the sunshine totals, and even what we have seen today has still been quite a valiant effort given the current synoptic situation.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 3pm was 19.9ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 19ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 19.5ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Some decent sunny spells since my last report has now led to a total of 1.7 hours of sunshine being recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 5pm this afternoon. The clouds appear to be a bit more broken just now and with the Sun still shining as I write, we would well be on course for a completely sunny evening ahead. That won't now be enough to prevent today from being the dullest day of this month so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank, but it would at least allow the day to finish off on a high note.

Today's maximum temperature was 20.5ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 20ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 19.8ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This keeps up the remarkable record which we have where there has just been the one day during this month so far where the temperature has failed to reach 20ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank. That is made even more remarkable by the fact that we are supposed to be in a cooler and fresher spell of weather just now.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 5pm this afternoon was 19.9ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 20ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 19.3ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Cloudy morning but it became sunny eventually, currently 20C with sunshine after an earlier max of 22.5C

Went to Garforth just east of Leeds today and seeing the rolling golden landscape under blue skies was quite something. Looked like the south of France.
