17.1 mm to add - 15mm of this fell in as many minutes. A check of the ground a few hours after the storm showed that this has only penetrated to an inch down. A lengthy spell of steady rain needed to adequately water the garden! Total now at 17.7mm.

A total of 9.6 mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during yesterday along with 7.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

However, today has been completely dry so far.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that now takes this month's total so far to 21.4 mm, the total for this summer so far to 21.4 mm and the total for this year so far to 289.6 mm as at 7am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that now takes this month's total so far to 16.4 mm, the total for this summer so far to 16.4 mm and the total for this year so far to 287.6 mm as at 7am this morning.

Even with yesterday's rainfall, this month is still running drier than average overall, albeit not as dry as it was beforehand. However, I have looked more into that by examining the number of official rain days (days where there has been 1.0 mm or more of recorded rainfall) and the manner in which this month is running drier than average is not actually in the manner in which this would have been expected to happen.

At Edinburgh Gogarbank, there has been 6 official rain days during this month so far, which is 57.7% of the 1981-2010 June average for that station so that for Edinburgh Gogarbank at least, this month is actually running at around average to slightly wetter than average in terms of the number of official rain days.

At the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, there has been 5 official rain days so far this month which is 52.1% of the 1981-2010 June average for that station, so the number of official rain days there is running at around average for this month so far.

It turns out therefore, that the reason why this month is drier than average cannot be due in any way, to the lack of days where it has actually rained in this part of the world and is instead, due to the fact that the actual amounts of rain which has fallen on most of those official rain days have been very small.

That in turn nicely ties in with the lack of rain which we have been getting from any Atlantic weather systems during this month because it turns out that most of those rain days have resulted from fairly isolated clusters of showers which have produced around 1 mm or so of rain.

That ends up being the final total for the day in question due to the rather isolated nature of these shower clusters which means that the virtually all of the day in question is actually almost entirely dry as a result, yet the amounts of rain which have fallen from those showers have been enough to render that entire day as an official rain day. That in turn is what has led to the number of rain days being disproportionately high in this part of the world in relation to the actual rainfall amounts during this month so far.

13.2mm here, this is the lowest for June since I started recording in 2007.

Very little expected the next week or so at least.

The dryness is starting to be of some concern, but far less problematic than the regular deluges which set in about this time last year.

A total of 0.2 mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during last night, thanks to a shower of rain at around 10pm along with 0.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

I can only assume as well, that there must have been another shower of rain during the early hours of this morning which I wasn't up to to be able to see, because in addition to what I have just reported above, a further 0.2 mm of rain has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 7am this morning along with 0.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that now takes this month's total so far to 21.8 mm, the total for this summer so far to 21.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 290.0 mm as at 7am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that now takes this month's total so far to 17.2 mm, the total for this summer so far to 17.2 mm and the total for this year so far to 288.4 mm as at 7am this morning.
