If you cast your memory back to a year ago at this time, we had gone into the month of June on a fairly dry note after what had been a dry spring overall. The month of June itself then started off on a fairly dry note and so at that point in time, we were enjoying a not too bad start to the summer as a result. However, we then started to get a lot of thundery downpours and in the end, this led to us experiencing our wettest June on record here in Edinburgh.

At the moment, I have nothing to report in terms of any rainfall which we have had during this month so far and we have currently gone into the 19th day of an absolute drought which began on 14 May 2018. Thundery showers have been forecast for both today and tomorrow, although the trend is for it to become drier again after that according to the latest model output. It will be interesting to see what happens beyond that but whatever does happen during this month, this is the very place to log that on this forum.

In the end, a total of 3.6 mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during yesterday along with 2.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Today on the other hand, has been completely dry so far.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that now takes this month's total so far to 3.6 mm, the total for this summer so far to 3.6 mm and the total for this year so far to 271.8 mm as at 6am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that now takes this month's total so far to 2.8 mm, the total for this summer so far to 2.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 274.0 mm as at 6am this morning.

There is still a risk of big showers and/or thunderstorms during today. After that, this risk dies down although there is still the possibility of a few showers over the following few days. The general outlook is therefore still looking fairly dry, although probably not as dry as it has been recently. This means that probably won't be going back into a drought any time soon but on the other hand and unlike this time last year, I don't think that this month will end up being our wettest June on record either.

In the end, a total of 2.2 mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during yesterday along with 1.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that as well, a total of 3.0 mm of rain has fallen during this morning so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 7am, along with 2.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that now takes this month's total so far to 8.8 mm, the total for this summer so far to 8.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 274.0 mm as at 7am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that now takes this month's total so far to 6.6 mm, the total for this summer so far to 6.6 mm and the total for this year so far to 275.6 mm as at 7am this morning.

Since it was still raining here at 7am this morning, the above totals for today are unlikely to be today's final totals. However, that rain is expected to peter out during the course of today with the outlook then becoming drier after that, at least for a while as high pressure takes charge once again. What happens beyond that is uncertain, although there are a few hints that it could become more unsettled again, later on in the month.

This was a post which I meant to submit on Monday, but was unable to do so for various reasons (after that, I had forgotten all about that until now).

In the end, a total of 3.2 mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during Sunday along with 2.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

However, it has been completely dry since then.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that now takes this month's total so far to 9.0 mm, the total for this summer so far to 9.0 mm and the total for this year so far to 277.2 mm as at 9am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that now takes this month's total so far to 7.0 mm, the total for this summer so far to 7.0 mm and the total for this year so far to 278.2 mm as at 8am this morning.

After a fairly wet start to the month, it has now become a lot drier with no rain at all in the forecast, at least until the weekend when there could then be a few showers around. Beyond that though, the models do start to point towards a more unsettled outlook but even with that, this month is still unlikely to end up being the wettest June on record like last year.

Nothing at all since 13th May which makes 25 days without measurable precipitation.

Possibly the longest drought since the record 35 days in spring 1953 though I recorded 26 days in spring 2007 with only two falls of 0.2mm.

Unlike in some other parts of the country such as Aberdeen, there's no official drought here in Edinburgh. However, we now haven't had any measurable rainfall since last Sunday which makes today, the 6th day of yet another dry spell (if it stays dry up until and including Monday, we will then be halfway towards another official drought with the last one having just ended last weekend).

Clearly, there has been no change to the totals which I reported on my last post on this thread, so this has turned into an exceptionally dry period of weather now. Having said that though, the outlook is for the weather to become more unsettled in general from the second half of next week and even today, I'm keeping a close eye on some very hefty showers which have developed to the SW of here, which would in their-selves be bringing our current dry spell to an end if they were to reach us here in Edinburgh.

Which I then then looked at the radar map just a short while ago, I noticed that there was a shower of rain right over Aberdeen city centre, albeit not a very heavy one.

However, I then checked weathercast.co.uk and as far as your area is concerned, the only station on that site where rainfall figures are reported is at Dyce and there, there was still nothing in the way of rainfall showing up for today as at 11pm tonight. SO all in all, it looks as though you have had a very narrow escape on that front.

In the end, a total of 1.2 mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during yesterday thanks to some early evening showers along with 0.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

So far, today has been completely dry as at 7am this morning.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that now takes this month's total so far to 10.2 mm, the total for this summer so far to 10.2 mm and the total for this year so far to 278.4 mm as at 7am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that now takes this month's total so far to 7.2 mm, the total for this summer so far to 7.2 mm and the total for this year so far to 278.4 mm as at 7am this morning.

What is interesting as well is that so far during this summer, all of the above totals have come from convective rainfall (in this case, from the tail end of nearby thunderstorms) with nothing at all, coming from any of our more typical weather systems which would normally be coming in from off the Atlantic on a more typical zonal weather pattern.

There are some showers forecast for today with the possibility of a few light showers still being around during the first part of the new week. Beyond that, the outlook is then generally more unsettled from the second half of next week onwards and so, the outlook is no longer looking quite as dry as it was not too long ago.

Hopefully, this doesn't mean that this is "it" for our summer, but I'm sure that the gardens will welcome that much needed bit of rain and this should also mean that there is little or no chance of us going into another drought at any point during the foreseeable future.

In the end, a total of 0.2 mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during yesterday along with 0.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that as well though, a total of 1.2 mm of rain has fallen during this morning so far at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at 7am this morning, courtesy of some showers which were around just after midnight. However, these showers completely missed the area altogether where Edinburgh Gogarbank and Edinburgh Airport are located which means that today is still completely dry so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 7am this morning.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that now takes this month's total so far to 10.4 mm, the total for this summer so far to 10.4 mm and the total for this year so far to 278.4 mm as at 7am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that now takes this month's total so far to 9.0 mm, the total for this summer so far to 9.0 mm and the total for this year so far to 280.2 mm as at 7am this morning.

Since we are not all that far short of the halfway mark in this month, we have to say that this has been a very dry start to this month and a very dry start to the summer, albeit not as dry as it has been in some other parts of the country. This in turn, is in complete contrast to last year when the summer was wetter than average overall, having began with our wettest June on record.

The absolute drought did finally end yesterday morning though with 0.2mm of drizzle falling so it finished on 28 days which is probably the third longest in the past century here after 1953 and 1947.

Rainfall data for Dyce seems to be missing at the moment but 0.4mm fell at Craibstone and 0.2mm at Balmedie and Westhill. Still nothing at Nigg or Inverurie since 13th May according to data here http://apps.sepa.org.uk/rainfall

A total of 1.4 mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during last night, thanks to a weather front associated with Storm Hector along with 0.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

However, today has been completely dry so far.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that now takes this month's total so far to 11.8 mm, the total for this summer so far to 11.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 280.0 mm as at 7am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that now takes this month's total so far to 9.4 mm, the total for this summer so far to 9.4 mm and the total for this year so far to 280.6 mm as at 7am this morning.

This month remains on course to be a substantially drier than average month, and the fact that we had so little rain from this latest weather system is only serving to further emphasize that just now. In the meantime, the short-term outlook is still a relatively unsettled one and there could still be some showers around over the next few days (these are very likely to occur, but this still doesn't guarantee that they actually will occur). However, the forecast models indicate that the weather is likely to settle down after that, thus reducing that risk of rain and/or showers in the process.
