Some very beefy showers forming in southern North Sea which may affect the Kent coast around 9am.  Keep an eye out, may be the first (albeit very wet and sleety) snow Ive seen falling in 2 years.  Last time I can remember seeing snow falling IMBY was March 2018.

In the NE the snow is quite dry and powdery. Should be easily cold enough for some wet snow in the SE. Those showers off the kent coast look incredibly beefy.

It's the same old thing down here, by the looks of it - the first band of showers is fizzling out as it approaches Kent. The second, heaver band looks a better prospect, but it's a long way out still.

Should any of the showers make it here, I'll let you know what they contain!

EDIT: And according to GFS, at least, it's -10C at 850 here... several degrees below the coldest recorded last winter and remarkably low for the time of year.

Reading 1048.1 mb here currently, while Malin Hd on the very north coast is reading 1050 mb, so the March record of 1047.1 mb recorded all the way back on the 13th back in 1900 is gone. All time highest reading in Ireland is 1051.9 mb, which I doubt will be broken this time around but there is a few hours of opportunity this morning before pressure starts to recede again in the afternoon.

I will add, just for a bit of fun, that the end of March 1816 saw a strong high located in a similar position as the current one. Let's hope that we don't get to see a similar summer!

Zilch from that first band which, as expected, fizzled before it got here (light blue on radar = nothing on the ground when the air is dry).

Let's see what the second band gives!

...and the answer is... loads of rain, not even a hint of sleetiness.

What utter horse manure.

(You would have thought that -9C at 850 would have been enough, but apparently not. It's not even close, either, with an air temperature of 4.1C and a dewpoint of 2.4C - the latter having risen as the rain's set in).

That is exactly what we experience from a long ”cold” SEly in midwinter.

I'm sorry retron but I did laugh out loud at that post.

Showers fairly isolated here but definitely snow.

In other news 1051hpa!

I don't think people realize how crazy this is. It's like seeing 20C in January or snow at in June, that's how unusual this is.

There has never been HP of this strength outside of winter before. We are pushing up on the all time record at the end of March!

1050mb... and it's mostly cloudy and quite blustery with the odd shower rattling through.

Not quiet the weather you would expect with an air pressure like that!

Wonder if that band is a warm frontal feature.

If it is you might get snow out of it later as it pushes back south.

It is. Notice the higher thetaE values behind that band in the SE.

However do not panic. This is what it looks like by 5pm.

Just had that first band go through as Darren mentioned. Seemed to have a slight sleety mix in it, but looking so raw out there in that wind.

Here in Edinburgh, we had a pressure of 1048.4mb and rising at Edinburgh Gogarbank at 9am this morning.

It's a shame though, that this high pressure isn't on the other side of the UK from where it is and therefore, bringing us some real decent spring weather with a gentle wind from the south.

Had this been winter though, I'm sure that this would probably have been the case and in that scenario, this area of high pressure would probably not have been that position where it is just now, from where it is bringing in those cold winds from the N or NE with some snow showers in places.

It's just like the thing though, that this always seems to be be how it ends up.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Had some snow flurries here this morning. Of note this morning/last night has been the strength of gust at times. The funnelling effect off the Pennines increases the wind speeds locally.
