This one has *REALLY* set the cat among the pigeons! 

Has anyone done any analysis on the Siberian snow cover and whether it really is that important?  I've become excited before as the snow rushes across the continent, only to be disappointed by the subsequent winter for cold.  This year looks to be a slow starter, but other factors (not least of which the amount of blocking during the summer) suggest a colder winter may be more likely?

I think on average a rapid increase in snow cover across Siberian does promote increased strength of the Siberian High... But that can be a double-edged sword as the Siberian High can push across Russia into Europe but can also push across the Pole into Canada... If that happens it'll dump all the cold air into Canada and North America...
