The GFS 18Z on 5 September shows what looks like a full blown hurricane in the Mediterranean, specifically positioned near the Bay of Benghazi. With sea surface temperatures currently around 30°C in that area, it is well above the 27°C widely quoted as being required for this type of feature. I know we have discussions about Medicanes from time to time, but this looks like a particularly potent disturbance. Obviously it was at t+384 hours, but it illustrates what the physics suggests is possible.
