Looking at the daily figures, this is a rounded-up figure, but even if we assume 18.65 then we only need 10.6 for the last 3 days to hit the 18°C August. Today is cool and, down south, intermittently wet, but last night was a warm night.

I've looked back through the CET data to all years since 1960 (the 60s were notoriously dreary, almost a little-little-ice age in some respects) and found only 8 years out of the 66 to have a daily CET below 12. Most of these were in the 60s but with the exception of 1964, when there were 3, each event was a stand-alone day.

Both 1978 and 1964 had a single incidence of a sub-11 degree CET day. Only 31st in 1978 was below the 10.6 I mention.

It now seems likely that an over-18 August is on the cards leading to a summer CET temperature of perhaps 18.4 or 18.5, blowing away last year's record, which only topped 1976 by thousandths of a degree I think I remember Lanky saying. Truly extraordinary.

18.58C to 2 decimals for the comp

This follows 2026 being the warmest spring on record, and I think it's very likely that 2026 will break last year's record for the annual average.

The rest of the year only needs to be 0.03C above average to break the annual record now.

The slightly larger spread in predictions this month means that there's a bit more movement in the table and it's still wide open for a top 5 finish as we go into the final quarter of the year.
