As we have just entered into a brand new month and a brand new season, it is time for another thread.

The spring of 2026 was quite dry although the rainfall has been varied across much of the UK. During March and April, the UK as a whole was very dry. Here in Edinburgh, I was in what was probably one of the wettest parts of the UK during that time and for here, this spring wasn't as dry overall as last spring. Even with that though, it was still never really all that wet here during those months.

During May, that trend continued for here but across the UK, the rainfall was a lot more variable with a number of those locations which were lucky enough to experience those thunderstorms at the end of that big heatwave ending up much wetter as a result.

Here in Edinburgh, there is an ongoing trend at the moment for months to start off on a wet note and for much of the time, look as though it is going to end up being much wetter than average only for it to then dry up so much that there is then barely any rainfall at all in the second half of that month with that month end up being drier than average as a result, after looking for so long as though it was going to be wetter than average.

The latest model output is suggesting that this month is likewise, also likely to start off on a relatively wet note (this doesn't necessarily mean that it will be a complete washout such as what we saw in 2007 and 2012) but there are a number of hints in the unreliable time frames of those models that the second half of the month could then be much drier with even a possible return to warmer and sunnier weather.

The big question is whether or not that ends up happens, thereby continuing the trend for here which I've just mentioned or whether we end up seeing something completely different from that this month.

Regardless of how all of that pans out though, this is the very place to post those all important rainfall totals for this month in your area.

Thankfully we didn't miss out this time. 19.7mm + a further 2.5mm so far today. I can see us adding to that this week so it should set up the soil nicely for a spurt in growth when the temperatures start to rise again.
