A week of rather cold nights ahead for the time of year, but hopefully avoiding much in the way of frost for most thanks to a brisk wind, and with days between that might be warm enough to offset most or all of the negative temperature anomaly, the latter more likely later in the week as we see warmer air drawn around the high.

Allowing for typical bias currently gives me an estimated April CET close to 10.0°C.

I'm hoping that 'close to 10' means around 10.05 🙂

IIRC the CET has a bit of a western bias, which might translate to a warm bias at the moment. Parts of North Yorkshire have struggled to get above 7°C this afternoon while western reaches of England have made it to around 20°C.

The wind is forecast to start easing off this evening so it'll be interesting to see how far temperatures drop in the very dry airmass. Recent nights have stayed a little above what GFS predicted but in my experience its bias tends to be the other way around once winds fall light. OTOH it's not good with terrain (let alone building) heat storage and release, often behaving as if that process doesn't exist.

Just did a quick estimate and got 10.1 to 10.3°C for the April CET.

We've seen a delaying and watering down of easterlies that would make a winter month blush.

IMO, it's the lack of cold nights that is the killer.

Be interesting to see the YTD CET anomaly.

April finished on 10.4°C giving a 2- month mean total of 18.6 compared to 18.8 for last year's record spring.

The true gap is fractionally smaller as the 31 day win for 2026 will fractionally outweigh the 30 day win for 2025.

Interestingly after a hot start, May last year had a dip before warming up again.
